Landed an internship...What's Next?

Hello all,

As the title says, I recently landed an internship at a small IB in my city for the summer of 2025, and couldn’t be more excited to start. For a little background, I attend a semi-target on the west coast and I graduate in 2028.

I am seeking advice as to what's next in terms of my plan of action. I am honestly shocked I even landed the internship at the IB, but I casted my net super wide for the summer of 2025 as I am only a freshman. IB/PE is the end goal, but I would love to work at a MM or Boutique bank upon graduation. I would love to hear suggestions on what I can do for summer 2026, since a lot of my intern class are sophomores/juniors and recruiting for that big offer next summer. I am open to opportunities both on the buy and sell side

Thanks

Congratulations on landing the internship! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps you can take to maximize your opportunities and plan for the summer of 2026:

  1. Network Actively:

    • Build relationships with your colleagues, mentors, and other professionals in the industry.
    • Attend networking events, both virtual and in-person, to expand your connections.
  2. Leverage Your Internship:

    • Make the most of your current internship by learning as much as possible and demonstrating your skills and work ethic.
    • Seek feedback regularly and show a willingness to improve.
  3. Plan for Next Summer:

    • Start researching and applying for internships early, ideally by the fall of 2025.
    • Consider both buy-side (Private Equity, Hedge Funds) and sell-side (Investment Banking, Equity Research) opportunities.
  4. Enhance Your Skill Set:

    • Take relevant courses or certifications that can bolster your resume (e.g., financial modeling, valuation).
    • Participate in finance-related clubs or competitions at your university.
  5. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Practice technical and behavioral interview questions.
    • Use resources like the WSO Investment Banking Prep to get a comprehensive understanding of what to expect.
  6. Stay Informed:

    • Read financial publications and follow market developments.

By following these steps, you'll be well-prepared to secure a strong internship for the summer of 2026 and continue progressing towards your goal of working at a MM or Boutique bank upon graduation. Good luck!
