IB and this is coming from someone who did sales and trading and then transitioned to IB. The transition is costly and time-consuming (read: business school). IB has considerably more exit opps and likely more $$ (please no one mention starting salary etc).

I have given this same advice to anyone who has asked.

If I read your post correctly you're saying you transitioned to IB post MBA? If PE is not the end goal would S&T-->MBA-->BB/EB IB be a viable path?

It is certainly possible. It is just an unnecessarily long/costly process as the above poster said.

Reason why it might be frowned upon by some is because S&T folks rarely do MBAs. People who go into trading don't want to leave, generally speaking. So it isn't as common as seeing bankers/PE people doing MBA

If you put in the work and network, there's no reason why you wouldn't be able to transition to IB internally, rather than having to bite the bullet and do an MBA. Not only this, but top MBAs require 3-4 years of solid experience. So 2 years as an S&T analyst won't necessarily solidify your candidacy, if that makes sense.

Totally get what you're saying - reason i'm asking is that I'm planning on getting an MBA anyways because I know I'd enjoy the 2 years off and coming from a non-target I'd want that pedigree boost. Also money's not a factor for me but I'm sure for most people this path won't make much sense.

So essentially I rather work 3 years in S&T, get an MBA, and explore IB/consulting options than grind for the next 20-30 years. To each his own.
