M7 Recruiting for Banking Summer Associate

I come from a non finance background (PM) and am targeting IB summer associate. What should I expect at an M7 in terms of % who land IB, when the process actually starts, and best resources for people without finance? Also curious about school/club tactics that actually mattered vs noise. Thank guys!

I came from an M7 core school and summered at a BB and now at an EB. From what I’ve seen, if you’re a non-international, non-diversity male who takes recruiting seriously, you probably have around a 65% chance of landing a spot at one of the banks recruiting on campus in a typical year. Those firms are mostly BBs, EBs, and a handful of solid middle markets. It’s still a messy process. I’ve watched smart, well-liked classmates strike out early only to network into offers a few weeks later. That 70% assumes you stay focused on IB (not juggling multiple tracks) and that you handle networking events and chats like a normal person. The best mindset is that any bank recruiting on campus is a great opportunity. You can have preferences, but it’s expected you throw your hat in for most of them. The reality is that placement is part preparation, part timing and part luck.  At my school, the IB club basically ran the whole process from weekly technicals, mock interviews, and a tracker for every bank. Now when i go back they tell me that they use question banks like marginofalpha for tougher technical reps especially for EBs

Yes exactly. The process is messy but what you can ensure is putting your best foot forward for each and every process and making sure you are well prepped. Summer associate is 10x better than summer analyst recruiting so really take advantage of it. It's coming up soon so make sure you're having fun in school but also putting in the work!

Am current MBA student at M7, any best resources to be using? Know that our banking club provides guides on timelines and etc. Also did you feel like EB interviews are harder than BBs or no noticable differences? Also is the demographic a bit different for people that go to BBs vs EBs?

Great questions! Yes EBs prioritize much more technical skills than BBs, because in undergrad it kinda self selects for hardos in EBs and as an associate you're supposed to come in and 1 year later be better than these A2s so they generally look for people with past finance experience or unless you are diversity. The best resource is literally your banking club, they should know the school context, give you guys question bank, and also understand the situation the best like I mentioned above

I just graduated and my experience its kind of hit and miss for internationals especially the visa situation. Came from an M7 and would say that the HSW brand was definitely much stronger so thats definitely a plus. Also depends on whether you're DEI or not, if not would say like 50%+, would assume consulting also has a really strong potential, lot's of opportunities in MBA

it's a platform people use for questions just search it up...

Just remember that getting an offer is only the first step. There’s another huge cut at the end of the summer when return offers go out.

given it’s mostly EBs and BBs who sponsor. Me and many classmates of mine at MBA just wouldn’t have gotten an offer if we were international as many of us targeted those firms but landed MM or industry boutique. For the total population (including international) not getting an offer was rare but AI didn’t exist and markets were ripping
