Magazines!!
I am currently preparing my spring week applications and I just wanted to know what journals, newspapers or magazines would you all recommend reading? These can be for general finance knowledge or for strengthening my concepts.
Thanks in advance!
I was told by a mentor in a BB that Financial Times and The Economist are good for building commercial awareness for juniors. Ultimately though just read what you find interesting.
I read the WSJ daily, FT as well when I fly. Economist weekly (but it’s biased shit too often). Foreign Affairs is great but not financially relevant. Zero Hedge for the other side of the coin. Then a bunch of industry mags (not relevant for this discussion).
If you can get a hold of Bloomberg Markets, read it. Business week is shit.
I’ll read Barrons and IBD as well.
Here is a short reading list. If you follow just one from each of these three sections you'll be well prepared.
(I am heavily biased towards private equity and venture capital because reasons etc..)
General News
(You really only need one. Bloomberg is no longer free and WSJ can stand in for Barrons but Financial Times may be the best value overall.)
Recent Transactions and Deal Terms
(When someone asks you to tell them about a deal you followed this is where you should be looking to find them. Stay current but don't go overboard.)
Economics and Market Data
(Almost every major firm has a section of their website called "Insights", "Outlook" or "Commentary" etc... so choose whichever you prefer and use these for ideas when people ask you about recent industry trends you have been following.) Here are some examples;
Honorable mention: General Concepts
This should be enough for a student. Don't forget to follow employers on linkedin just in case you run out of things to talk about or the person you meet with is not in a finance role.
I enjoy reading WALLSTREETOASIS.com
Thanks, Mr. Blankfein.
My two must reads are WSJ and the Pro Rata daily newsletter. And then from there I'll look up additional info whether on FT or other sites. Business Insider is kind of a joke but honestly gets you a lot of the headlines you need and is easy to sift through. Definitely should not rely on BI though.
Morning Brew is an awesome read every morning. 10/10 would recommend.
Probably a bad example, but I just read the front page, US, and World news headlines of the WSJ, takes maybe 60 seconds a day.
