MD banter

Sent an LinkedIn message to an MD in a group in which i applied to. He got back to me, told me to forward him my resume. He reviewed, and replied "very good resume, when will you be in X city next?"

Does this mean his firm does not pay for travel expenses regarding interviews? Should i schedule a trip to X city (the city is pretty far from where i live and would require hotel and flight)?

yea....that's what i should have said...i already kinda jumped the gun though...i sent him an email back this after noon saying "I can fly up at any time, my schedule is very flexible. i'd really appreciate the opportunity to meet you." annnnddd he has not responded yet

that said, how can i salvage this connection? should i send him another short email saying "I've applied and would we be able to connect via phone at some point in the near future" or something along those lines??

What type of firm is this (ex. bb, mm etc) and definitely schedule a trip to this city asap - doesn't guarantee an interview but could be a informational interview that could result to it.

Go for it and don't look back. Good luck!!!!!!!

btw - is this FT or SA and do you have prior internship exp? - just curious.

what's there to salvage? your relationship with the MD hasn't started... just give him a week or two before sending off another note.

i fell into this mentality too when i was networking too, thinking that if they don't respond right away, they must dislike me. but now that i'm working in the industry, i realize sometimes things get extremely hectic and sometimes your email will be ignored not because people are assholes, but because we only have certain amount of time in the day to get our work done.

Absolutely not- he asked when would you be in the city next. He did not ask to interview you through any sort of formal process (in which case even still many MMs will not pay for travel expenses if it involves a flight). I read this as- let's grab a cup of coffee/lunch next time you are in town to see if I like you. Not "we want you at our firm and will fly you in ASAP to make it happen."

If this is important enough for you, can you fly in cheaply to where he's located? (and possibly line up a few other meets to make it worthwhile). Next Monday is probably too hectic, but email him next Tue & say something along the lines of "not sure if you saw my last email, but I may be in town in xxx days, are you up for a brief chat at your time/place of convenience?" If he invites you for an actual INTERVIEW, the cost of the trip should be covered by his firm (although that's no guarantee). Otherwise, it's just..as you say...banter with an MD. If it's too costly for you to cover the trip, see if he's up for a Skype call or a video conference at a nearby regional office of that firm.
