MD/Global Heads Referral
Hi all,
I’m about to graduate from LSE (MSc) and actively recruiting for IB roles (both BB and MM). I’ve been fortunate to build strong relationships with a few Senior MDs/Heads at banks across Singapore, Dubai, and a Global Head at GS in New York, This has largely been possible because they share my home country background and are part of a small group of professionals who have reached such senior positions globally. Additionally,my father’s career in banking back home has connected me to the same professional circle.
A few questions: • How impactful are referrals from very senior people (Heads of divisions, Senior MDs) in securing interviews/offers especially in Singapore and Dubai? • I’ve heard in London even high-level referrals don’t carry much weight due to the structured/grad recruiting process. Is that accurate? • Are these referrals more effective in less rigid markets like Singapore or Dubai? • Most importantly, how can I make the best use of these relationships? My target market is London, but considering the job market, I’m open to Dubai and Singapore too.
I have had an internship in IB back home and an internship in Vc in London.
Would appreciate any insights or advice.
Thanks!

from what I've gathered - London referrals matter depending on the shop. I might be wrong but from what I know BBs don't have a referral system/even referrals from seniors will get blocked by HR. Im sure networking with people that senior will have some pull once you can get in the interview room
Thanks for the response.Yea been hearing the same! Do you think its df for Dubai and Singapore.
can't comment on that as I don't know anything about Dubai and Singapore. I found the best way to figure these things out is just ask current SAs or mentors at shops youre interested in because it might be awkward to bring these things up in a convo with seniors or even current juniors
95% don't but there are a few in which a referral gets you an interview such as Morgan Stanley
What other? Any botiques or MM?
I know for the BBs it doesn't matter, it helps in some AM firms. I think it might help in PE and am looking into this. Additionally I've networked a lot with the London office of this one elite boutique and would guess it will help more, depending on the size. This EB's office size is not as big here and referrals from multiple employees will likely help. Likewise, I would assume it won't help for an EB like Lazard, where DEI comes in before anything. MM is on and off, eg HSBC has no system
