Mentioning Offers

When interviewing with one company, when should you mention that you have an offer with another firm? I don't want to sound like a cocky fuck but I would like to make myself seem desirable. Should I just mention it when they ask who else I am interviewing with?

Change your answer a bit depending on who you are interviewing with.

If interviewing with a bulge bracket, say something like: "I'm interviewing with several other bulge brackets, but I'm particularly interested in this firm because of its _______ (culture / people you've spoken with / specific group / etc.)"

If interviewing with a middle market or boutique, say something like: "I'm interviewing with several similar firms, as well as bulge brackets, but I am more interested in boutiques such as this firm because I prefer ______ (small teams / more senior or client exposure / butt sex / etc.)"

Never mention specific names. If they ask, just say confidently "Sorry, I prefer to keep that private." Mentioning specific names can only harm you, even if it's Goldman Sachs.

I disagree a bit ... having done recruiting ta BB's ... mentioning specific names can help you (or hurt). It might be a bit too snobby but I know of some firms (from experience) will want to hire you more if you say "I have an offer from M&A at MS ... etc)

Reason being if a great group at a BB wants you, it might add some more info about your quality as a candidate (relationship, ability, etc)

However, I wouldn't walk around and be like "I have an offer from GS, hire me ..." They'll just think you're a douche

Use best judgment

Be smart about how you mention it

Yea I was giving more generic advice, the reason being that it depends on the situation. Dropping specific names can help or harm you.

If Morgan Stanley M&A asks you if you have offers, and you tell them you have an offer at Goldman Sachs, then it makes you a more desirable candidate and they will want to hire you.

If Citi asks you, and you tell them you have an offer at Goldman Sachs, they will likely reject you because they know you most probably won't take the offer and they don't like to be used as a backup and then rejected.

Same goes the other way: If you tell Deutsche Bank that you have an offer at RBC, it probably won't help you much. If you tell Goldman Sachs you have an offer at RBC, they also won't be impressed.

So to sum up, in 3 out of 4 cases, mentioning specific names won't help you, and it's better to keep it a mystery to them. The only case it can help is if you're considering offers among the top groups at top banks, and want them to feel that you're the best candidate out there. I think it's best to play it safe.

This was one of the main reasons I got my job (at a HF). When I was asked if I was interviewing anywhere else, I casually said "a global investment bank" (didnt get the offer though). Interviewer was intrigued, and asked which one, and thats when I told him the name of the BB. Turned out he worked for the same BB for 15 years prior to starting the HF.
