Micromanaging Team: How to Cope?

My team is very lean, five days in-office, and, over weekends, expects instant responses to all requests. If you’re in the bathroom for ten minutes, you’ll get hit with a “where are you??.” Whenever anyone isn’t in the office, the team insists on a day-long Teams call.

It’s not that this is mission-critical, but, rather, that it’s an exploitation of control. The “I own you” mindset. MDs do this to VPs, VPs to associates, and associates to analysts. There is zero informality, small talk, or collegiality within the team. It’s designed to be a “circular firing squad.”

The hours themselves are not insane, but this culture is very hard to take. Can never step out to go to the gym or take a walk and get something done on my own time, and am constantly pulled from work stream to work stream at a VP’s leisure, interrupting whatever I’ve done. Feels as if I am under minute-to-minute control, and cannot stand it.

How do you cope with this?

Not the answer you wanna hear, but if it’s that endemic across all levels the only thing you can do is leave. Nothing about excessive micromanaging is benefiting your professional development, in fact it’s likely handicapping you.

You should be at a place that manages on a curve. Very new = micromanaging to an extent until you learn the ropes, but 2-3 months in you should be treated relatively independently once proven to be competent.
