Mismanaged Expectations and Attitude with Boss
I want to see what's reasonable to expect in this situation, am I being unreasonable?
In this situation, I'm pricing a deal at 2:30 and there's the presentation at 6:30. The administrative assistant is out (and has been for the past year) so I've been physically printing and binding books for the senior bankers in the office.
This is fine, if menial, but it's cathartic after doing computer shit all day so I don't mind as long as there's time for it. But sometimes there's not, like in this case.
My responsibility as an analyst is to price the deal and make sure the numbers jive with the underwriter and the lawyers. Normally, admin's job is to make the post pricing book.
Boss today mentions that he doesn't want to see the rating letter in the book. Only the rating reports.
Don't know why he's telling me since the admin is the one who puts together the post-pricing book but ok.
Pricing is usually an intensive process with many steps, but since I've been also printing books in the past year, it's crunch time for both.
I don't even have time to look at the post-pricing book since by the time it's time to print 15 50-page books with 7 dividers, it's 4pm, which gives me an hour. Maybe not enough time.
Boss is annoyed that the rating letter is included in the books by the admin assistant (of course it is).
To be clear, I have never had any hand in making the books. But obviously, his thought is, because I have to print them today, in addition to pricing the bonds just an hour prior, I am supposed to catch this.
I am literally catching flak for an administrative task I'm handed because the admin is taking full advantage of WFH while she still can.
The boss also has a penchant for giving me tasks in between pricing and the books, as I'm making them. He wants me to send emails that he could send. Wants me to run a league table of comps and to call the underwriter so can have speaking points at tonight's meeting. Which is fine, but there's not physically time for all of this.
It's the point there I'm having difficulty hiding my annoyance at his annoyance due to expectations I consider borderline unreasonable. If the admin printed, like per her job, this would never come up, but yet it has. At the 11th hour it makes no sense to remove the rating letter when there's barely enough time to print to begin with.
As an analyst, is it my lot in life to smile and take it, or should I respectfully push back? What does that even look like in this case (one of many unfortunately)?
People will push you and pile on until you pipe up and let them know your capacity. It sounds like you're at the point where you have to pick between deadlines, so you should absolutely need to have the conversation.
Appreciate the response these are my thoughts as well. Used to be I could brute force my way through tasks but no longer. Definitely weak on communication because of this.
