Missed emails on blackberry

So I left my blackberry at home, not expecting any emails at 5pm, and then came back at 8:30pm to a flurry of emails, including 2 from an associate asking me to turn comments for tonight.

I called him and he had already come into the office (he lives far away) and was doing it himself. He said he was just then finishing up and called me out on it. I just started and have made a few other mistakes with this associate. He was definitely angry, but there was nothing either of us could do at that point.

What should I do? Is there anything? Feel really bad about it from a work perspective and also a personal perspective for wrecking his weekend.

Also is this the sort of thing that creates a really bad reputation for an analyst? Who ultimately decides who is a top analyst?

This is my blackberry. There are many others like it, but this one is mine. My blackberry is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my blackberry is useless. Without my blackberry, I am useless.

Just keep it on you 24/7 in the future. Nothing to do about the situation now.

you are getting paid to be available. that is what you do. you are not getting paid to be a jedi master at excel. you are getting paid to be available.

well i think you prob realize now that leaving your blackberry at home for 3 1/2 hrs on a random saturday is a FUCKING STUPID idea. it also defeats the purpose of the device since it was given to you so you could send and receive emails when away from your computer. that thing needs to be on your ear or in your pocket at all times for the next 3 yrs at least and YES THIS IS HOW YOU GET A BAD REPUTATION with ppl higher up the food chain.

did u see last weeks episode of entourage? remember the scene when ari and mrs ari are getting it on and while they're at it she picks up his blackberry and hands it to him. thats how close your blackberry should be to you at all times - close enough for your mrs or some random golddigger you picked up to grab it and hand it to you will you're doing your deed.

this is def off topic but entourage blows now... the first couple of seasons were cool and really showed how the movie business worked and all the behind the scenes action going on before a movie gets made

now the whole show is basically sex and the city for men... lets show sex, fast cars in every episode. lets have the dumbest plot about ari owning an nfl team (im almost embarrassed that the writers thought this was a good idea) because the proles will eat that shit up. this shit fucking sucks now... although i guess im the idiot for still watching it lol

looking for that pick-me-up to power through an all-nighter?

The Phantom
mezzmonkeyari is still a frickin hero!

Ari is one thing I like about Entourage. Everyone else blows on that show. Also a guy like E would never end up with a girl like Sloan.

Sloan is so f'n hot.

That is all.

This is bad -- especially since you just started. But as mentioned before, nothing you can do about it now. Having apologized to the associate, this is over and done with. Just don't let it happen again.

General rule of thumb for first years: email responses are expected within 30 minutes. So that means if you're going out for more than 30 minutes, the Blackberry HAS to be with you. After about six months or so, you gain a bit of leeway. I'm a second year now and I don't hesitate to leave my phone in my apartment if I'm going to the gym, out to dinner with friends/girlfriend, etc. But I've built enough of a rapport over the past year-plus where I can get away with responding to an email from my VP/MD 90 minutes later (on a Saturday of course -- Monday thru Thursday, that thing needs to be on you 24-7).

You are paid to work lots of hours and be available 24-7. Just don't screw this part up again -- it's the easiest part of the job to get right.

Anthony .Sloan is epic.

The whole Middle Eastern look is hot.

Yeah, I have to 2nd that motion. Emmanuelle has this girl next door personality mixed with stunning good looks and appears to be down to earth...but who knows, maybe she is just using me for my money.

I love the darker/tan skin, dark features.

I have penciled out a plan to get down to Argentina which is hear is totally epic. I'm actually scared I will end up in love, married and a fugitive in South America in hopes of never returning to America, lol. Maybe I will have to plan it with some buddies so they can forcefully drag me onto the plane if necessary.

I have had problems with a frtizy blackberry in the past, and my solution was to just let everyone know what my cell phone number is. I also set up an automatic autoresponder so that if someone emailed me outside of business hours and it was something that required MY urgent attention, they could reach me at my cell phone.

Sometimes, you're out of touch and can't respond. As long as they manage to reach you 10 times for every time they can't reach you in the off-hours and there's other people who CAN respond, that's all right for most purposes.

JMHO from the research/trading side of things. Was responsible for coming up with 15% of the overnight risk on the firm's balance sheet for our CFO for two years, but I never got into serious trouble for missing 10% of my pages and having them go to my SVP or another analyst/associate.

I definitely agree with this... if you're a second-year analyst or above and you've built a strong rapport with the people you're working with. If you're a first-year and just started a month ago, you should be reachable 100% of the time -- setting up an autoresponder is a terrible idea for a kid just starting -- talk about sending the wrong impression.

Again, think it depends on how many times he's been paged. If it's the first time, it looks pretty bad. If it's the fifth time, well, not quite as OK as it would look for a second or third year, but not quite as bad as it would for the first time. Either way, OP needs to have a track record of consistently responding to pages for the next couple of months.

Again- make sure everyone has your cell phone number. Sometimes you lose your blackberry, it runs out of batteries- stuff happens. Make sure your associate has a backup method of communicating with you.
