Missed FT Fall recruiting – Recommendations moving forward
I'm currently a senior and I wasn't able to secure any IB Analyst offers. While it is disheartening, I would like to move forward and best prepare for spring recruiting?
Given I don't have IB experience, am nontarget, and come from a non-finance background (engineering), I will be focusing on getting into a MM firm.
I know that MM firms have unstructured recruiting schedules, but is there anything that I can do right now that will help me get ahead of the crowd comes 2020?
Would I be better off emailing firms with hopes that a spot opens up and that they give me a shot, or should I be networking with as many MM members as possible? I'm only guessing, but I'm assuming very little spots will open up from now until I graduate (Spring 2020). That said, how could I most efficiently go about this?
Any other strategies that you would recommend I do, given my situation?
Many thanks.
One thing I've learned in finance is never to give up. Another thing I learned is that many times, if you Google things, you can find them and know how to do it yourself.
For example, look at the 2020 full-time analyst positions I found below: https://lazard.referrals.selectminds.com/students/jobs/2020-full-time-i… https://jobs.citi.com/job/san-francisco/banking-capital-markets-and-adv…
Have you at least tried applying to the places above?
Is there an easy way you found those postings? I typically go through each company's career page.
And I haven't networked with either of those banks. I think just applying would be pointless (tell me if i'm wrong). How would you recommend I go about these opportunities?
Btw, thank you :)
Just type your query into Google. That's what I did and these jobs popped up.
Also, keep checking the companies' careers pages. You never know when they might need another analyst. Continue network as well so you might be included if a firm decides to run an interivew process for a full-time analyst and never post it online.
I've always wanted to give back as well. I'd really like to be a WSO Mentor actually but don't know if I'd qualify.
To second this, Lazard Chicago 2020 just got posted on my school’s job board
Really appreciate you giving back to the community and making this public. Trust me, karma is real. Wish you the best of luck!
Maybe apply to a more quantitative discipline such as S&T and try to lateral? Being from a non-target I can tell you many of the regional MM firms don't even talk to non-business majors and it will be even more difficult to convince the firm that you want IB as an engineering major.
