Moelis Lateral Associate Process
Currently in process for a lateral Associate role at Moelis (NY coverage group). Curious if anyone here has gone through the lateral process recently and can share what to expect beyond the standard technicals/fit rounds.
Specifically wondering:
* How intensive the modeling portion is
* Whether it’s more M&A / merger model focused vs. 3-statement / LBO
* Time constraints and expected output
* Anything that surprised you relative to other EB processes
For context, coming from another IB platform so comfortable with standard technicals - mostly trying to calibrate the format and level of depth.
Appreciate any insight
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about the lateral Associate process at Moelis, particularly for the NY coverage group:
Modeling Portion Intensity:
The modeling portion is expected to be rigorous, as Moelis is known for its strong technical focus. You should be prepared for detailed exercises that test your ability to build and interpret models efficiently.
Focus Areas:
The process typically leans more towards M&A/merger models rather than standard 3-statement models or LBOs. However, having a solid grasp of all three is advisable, as lateral processes can vary slightly depending on the team or interviewer.
Time Constraints and Output:
Expect tight time constraints during the modeling tests. The goal is to assess not only your technical skills but also your ability to work under pressure and deliver accurate results within a limited timeframe.
Surprises Relative to Other EB Processes:
Moelis tends to emphasize practical application of technical knowledge. For example, you might be asked to interpret the implications of your model outputs on a deal scenario or provide strategic recommendations based on your analysis. This level of depth can be more demanding compared to other EBs.
Since you're coming from another IB platform and are comfortable with standard technicals, focus on sharpening your M&A modeling skills and practicing under time constraints. This will help you calibrate to the expected level of depth and speed for the Moelis process.
