For me the most vacation days I have ever had was 7 days PTO but I had to wait a yr to get it. I feel like companies are getting more and more stingy on this every year tho. There are also a lot of people who have them and don't take them because they feel pressured not to or guilty if they do.

Wow that's insane. I had a friend with a bait and switch scenario like that because they told everyone that but guilt tripped the hell out of them if they tried taking a day off. If you can take those days off do not take it for granted. That's great!

Definitely. I have had jobs where even taking one day off makes you a bad employee or not motivated enough. I didn't realize how toxic it was until I moved to a legit company and realized that work life balance does indeed exist!

I have 32 days off each year (22 vacation days and 10 holidays), as well as unlimited sick days.

It’s honestly hard to use all the vacation, but unused days do rollover into the next year. Most people take about 20 days off per year. Nice thing is when you’re on vacation you’re not expected to be available for calls/ emails so you can actually relax.

Most places I've worked, two weeks is standard for lower ranked employees. When climbing the ladder though, it gets higher as you go. I've been lucky. At some places, I've had 20 days, while at others (one in particular), taking a day off was like pulling teeth (and that's not including the rare case of FTO - forced time off - on a pure regulatory/necessary basis). I'd put in a day off request 3 months in advance and be told I couldn't have a decision until two weeks out. No matter what the reason I had for requesting the time off, it was always either I can't give you the time off now and ask again as it gets closer or a flat out no. As long as you give proper notice, people may guilt you into not taking it, but they can't stop you from using it, especially if there is a number of days that cap when they are rolled over.

Funny story about time off though... I have a friend who worked for a place that gave him unlimited PTO. The guy busted his ass, worked like a dog, took the odd day off here or there for things that he couldn't schedule around and telecommuted on those days. When he finally booked a vacation, he did it 4 months in advance, clears it with his manager and everything, taking a week to travel abroad. They let him go the day before he was supposed to go on his first vacation while with the company. Gave him a severance letter and everything... that they wouldn't honor. Why? Because he didn't get it back to them by the running of the next payroll (while he was away). My buddy asked for an extension after receiving a nasty email from the company's counsel demanding the severance agreement by EOD the day payroll was supposed to run (on the day payroll was ran). The guy was fucking livid, asked for more time and was flat out denied despite having limited access to email and technology. He threatened to sue them because of the unreasonableness of the situation. They said to bring it. The day he got back, he got a lawyer and had the lawsuit filed two days later. Needless to say, the company coughed up a pretty penny over that severance agreement.

To be clear - Forced Time Off simply means there is a regulatory statute requiring that the person have time to rest based on a certain number of hours worked. Essentially, you are forced to rest in order to recover to do your job. Healthcare, Trucking, Airline/Air Travel, and Rail work all have mandatory time off requirements between shifts. For example, a pilot has 10 hours of mandatory downtime after flying.

I can totally relate to your pulling teeth analogy. At an old position taking a day off had them firing people or putting them on probation but they always used another excuse as a reason to do it. I requested 2 days off because I was sick like REALLY sick and they made me feel terrible about it. "I guess we will just have to make someone else come in on their day off since you apparently can't". Will never work for another place like that again.

As for your bottom story that is the perfect example of greet and bait and switch. They want to get a bunch of employees with their perks but the minute you use them they cut you loose. That is so pathetic.

Yeah... I know. Sometimes my stories can be underwhelming when it comes to not wanting to get into the details (and massive posts).

I have usually gotten 10 days off + holidays and I use them all. I have never been at a job where you give notice as far as vacations are concerned and it is a problem. Taking 5 days off to go to Mexico here in a few months.

22 days PTO + holidays + 2 personal days + unlimited sick days

Only took off 7 days last year though, less this year so far

IMO early retirement beats quality of life at this point. I'll probably be done and out for good by about 45....and if the economy takes a dive anytime before then, it will only accelerate my exit.

Get busy living

Best friend works in tech and has worked at some solid start-ups. His last job gave “unlimited” PTO. We tested the unlimited bit on a couple long trips in a year and eventually they told him he hit the limit lol. Guess it came in around 5-6 weeks.
