Moving between firms as a graduate
Hey guys
Just a quick background to my situation. I spent the entire year aiming for roles within Economic consulting but had no luck. Recently my interest have turned to corporate finance. Helping companies raise capital and develop their business seems interesting. Unfortunately this only piqued my interests around 2 months ago and after relentlessly searching job sites and graduate job lists it's clear that most of the good schemes closed long ago.
Given the time frame I count myself lucky enough to have received an offer from KPMG for Audit in one of their regional offices (starting in Autumn), but the city itself seems boring and I've always had ambitions to live and work in London. Of course I'd be crazy to turn down a graduate job in this market. I've been browsing the site for a few weeks and I've seen a few people mention that Big 4 is more respected in Europe. Why is this?
Anyway, I plan to apply for 2013 finance roles (Investment Banking). I have solid credentials (top 6 uni, good grades, lots of ECs, etc) so I count my chances as decent. Should I include KPMG on my CV, as I plan to apply Sept/Oct once the schemes open? I figured that as any employer will eventually find out, it would look odd to omit it, however a month's worth of work experience on a professional CV looks silly. Catch 22.
Would it be better for me to wait a few months so I have some actual experience to discuss and apply in say December/January (but risk the best schemes filling up)? Any ideas what I should do?
Yeah. Wait until you have a few months of experience at KPMG before applying. I'd start building a network or a list of contacts now though.
I've talked to a few bankers in Europe and Asia and they all say a CPA/big 4 accounting experience is highly valued in banking. In US thats not the case.
Also keep in mind you will likely start at as a first year analyst wherever you go.
I'm completely fine with that. The problem with waiting a few months is the cyclical recruitment aspect and the tight deadlines. For example Goldman Sachs closes its applications in October 2012 for Autumn 2013 starts. So would you still advise waiting a few months and missing out on applying to any BB?
Doesn't matter breh. You profile isn't competitive enough to get you a front office job. Enjoy your big4 job brother.
Breh? Who says that...lol. Insecure tool. Go play somewhere else.
Not really. And my point still stands. Have fun trolling the internet breh.
This is the hierachy in terms of where you stand - BB IBD analysts - MM IBD analysts / BB Equity Research - Equity research bouqitues - Big 4 corporate finance - Big 4 transaction services -????? - Big4 Audit OUTSIDE of London
Each of the levels above will be trying to attain roles further up the ladder. I would estimate your chances of getting a BB IBD job at between 0% and 0.1%, but good luck brother. You should be trying to transfer to advisory or transaction services at your big4 firm in London, not having wet dreams about front office models and bottles.
As an example, headhunters sometimes find Big4 corporate finance London first year analysts better roles in MM IBD firms (think Jefferies, Piper Jaffray etc). Even those guys had no chance of BB IBD jobs. What fucking chance do you have?
Good luck brother.
I actually have an offer for Big 4 CF in London. Fabricated a story for the sake of anonymity, before realising this is an American site so it won't matter. Thanks bro.
There are many London brehs here friend. You're talking to one, albeit, a more preftigious bro than you've ever spoken to I'm sure. Went to HYPSW, worked in NYC, then moved to my preftigious fund here and am now mad stylin' across the city. U mad bro?
Yeah man. I'm so jelly.
Yeah man. I'm so jelly.
God you are a huge douche and I just wasted like 4 monkey shits on you... fuck.
Chaps this is too cute.
LDN reprezent (we're mad gansta in London)!
Dude is a troll, not a certified user = don't believe his bs. Also, why would someone who seems relatively successful waste his time trolling entry level guys he doesn't know on an online forum. Even if he isn't lying about his background, his actions reek of loser. Perhaps a loser who makes a good bit of money on a yearly basis, but a loser nonetheless.
