no clear yes or no on offer

Had a talk with my MD and he said that everyone in the group really liked me and that I did a great job over the summer, but at the moment he's not sure if the firm can extend an offer to me because they can't justify another analyst in the group. He told me to reach out again in a couple months to see if things pick up. Can I just say this when asked about my offer situation in interviews?

Well, what would you say exactly? I mean, you don't have an offer. You don't even have a pending offer. You have an MD who said they liked you, but not enough to make room for you (I don't mean for that to sound harsh - that's the reality of the environment right now). I'm not sure how you'd leverage that in an interview.

Well, he said that the reason they can't give me a yes or no right now is because there aren't a lot of transactions going on at the moment, which is true. And my associate did make it seem like they were very likely to offer me something in a couple months. It's a relatively small shop and I'm the only summer analyst they've had in a couple years. But now that I'm writing this down, it does seem like it could just be bs. Should I spin it and say that it was understood from the start that SA wouldn't lead to FT, and since they liked me they're gonna try to get me hired?

C'mon buddy. You think interviewers haven't heard every possible iteration of "I coulda had an offer but..."? I think you're better off just using the experience as a resume enhancer and talking point, and leaving all conjecture about possible offers out. In an interview it either makes you look gullible or like a bullshitter - neither of which is the impression you want to make on an interviewer.

You had a successful analyst gig that didn't lead to an offer. That's it. No need to church it up.

Eddie is spot on. Dont try and spin it this way and that. If you get asked about your previous experience, tell them what you did and learnt and leave it at that. If they ask why you didn't get an offer, say they had no space in the group at that time, but that the senior bankers gave great feedback and offered themselves as references (obviously make sure they actually will act as references first).
