No Internships, what now?
Hi everybody, so my goal is getting into IB in London or Frankfurt/Zurich. I'm from Germany and graduating this year from a semi-target (known locally, but not internationally) and have a solid GPA (top ~10%) and some extracurriculars. I also did an internship at a Big 4 in valuations recently, where I got a full-time offer.
My plan was to do a gap year doing internships before going to a top tier European masters (think LSE, HEC, Bocconi etc., ofc. heavily depending on my GMAT). My problem is, that I am not getting any internships whatsoever. So far I only had one interview, which I didn't get, apart from that zero invitations. Now im starting to question my plan, so I'm asking on here:
A: should I take the FT -> 1.5 years -> masters?
Or B: should I keep trying to secure internships for the gap year (which is fast approaching) with the risk of hurting my masters recruiting if I don't get anything?
Thank you for any and all input, I'm really running out of ideas here.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:
Option A: Take the Full-Time Offer

Option B: Keep Trying for Internships

Recommendations:
Leverage Your Big 4 Offer: If you're not getting traction with internships, the Big 4 offer is a strong fallback. Accepting it and gaining 1.5 years of experience before pursuing a master's is a safer and more structured path.
Parallel Efforts: While preparing to start your full-time role, continue applying for internships. If you secure one before your start date, you can always reassess.
Master's Strategy: Focus on excelling in your GMAT and targeting top-tier European master's programs. Schools like LSE, HEC, and Bocconi have strong IB pipelines, and your Big 4 experience combined with a top master's degree can make you a competitive candidate.
Networking: Start building your network now. Reach out to alumni, attend events, and connect with professionals in IB. Networking can sometimes open doors to opportunities that aren't publicly advertised.
Long-Term View: Remember, breaking into IB is a marathon, not a sprint. Even if you take the Big 4 route, you can still transition into IB post-master's with the right strategy and effort.
In summary, Option A (taking the full-time offer) seems like the more secure and practical choice given your current situation. However, keep pushing for internships in the meantime, and use your Big 4 experience as a stepping stone toward your ultimate goal.
