No Internships, what now?

Hi everybody, so my goal is getting into IB in London or Frankfurt/Zurich. I'm from Germany and graduating this year from a semi-target (known locally, but not internationally) and have a solid GPA (top ~10%) and some extracurriculars. I also did an internship at a Big 4 in valuations recently, where I got a full-time offer.

My plan was to do a gap year doing internships before going to a top tier European masters (think LSE, HEC, Bocconi etc., ofc. heavily depending on my GMAT). My problem is, that I am not getting any internships whatsoever. So far I only had one interview, which I didn't get, apart from that zero invitations. Now im starting to question my plan, so I'm asking on here:

A: should I take the FT -> 1.5 years -> masters?

Or B: should I keep trying to secure internships for the gap year (which is fast approaching) with the risk of hurting my masters recruiting if I don't get anything?

Thank you for any and all input, I'm really running out of ideas here.

What option to choose

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

Option A: Take the Full-Time Offer

  • Pros:

    • A full-time role at a Big 4 in valuations is a solid starting point, especially if you're targeting IB in Europe. Big 4 experience is respected and can provide a strong foundation in financial analysis and valuation skills.
    • Working for 1.5 years before pursuing a master's can help you save money, gain professional experience, and potentially secure sponsorship for your master's degree.
    • It positions you as a more experienced candidate during master's recruiting, which could make you more competitive for IB roles.
    • You avoid the risk of an unproductive gap year, which could raise questions during future interviews.
  • Cons:

    • You may have to wait longer to break into IB, as you'll need to transition post-master's.
    • The Big 4 brand, while strong, is not as directly aligned with IB as internships at banks or boutiques.

Option B: Keep Trying for Internships

  • Pros:

    • Securing internships in IB or related fields during a gap year can directly position you for IB roles post-master's.
    • It demonstrates your commitment to breaking into IB and provides relevant experience to discuss during master's recruiting.
    • A gap year filled with internships can help you build a network in the industry, which is crucial for IB recruiting.
  • Cons:

    • If you fail to secure internships, it could hurt your profile and leave you with an unproductive gap year, which might be viewed negatively by recruiters.
    • The time pressure is significant, and the lack of current traction suggests this path might be risky.

Recommendations:

  1. Leverage Your Big 4 Offer: If you're not getting traction with internships, the Big 4 offer is a strong fallback. Accepting it and gaining 1.5 years of experience before pursuing a master's is a safer and more structured path.

  2. Parallel Efforts: While preparing to start your full-time role, continue applying for internships. If you secure one before your start date, you can always reassess.

  3. Master's Strategy: Focus on excelling in your GMAT and targeting top-tier European master's programs. Schools like LSE, HEC, and Bocconi have strong IB pipelines, and your Big 4 experience combined with a top master's degree can make you a competitive candidate.

  4. Networking: Start building your network now. Reach out to alumni, attend events, and connect with professionals in IB. Networking can sometimes open doors to opportunities that aren't publicly advertised.

  5. Long-Term View: Remember, breaking into IB is a marathon, not a sprint. Even if you take the Big 4 route, you can still transition into IB post-master's with the right strategy and effort.

In summary, Option A (taking the full-time offer) seems like the more secure and practical choice given your current situation. However, keep pushing for internships in the meantime, and use your Big 4 experience as a stepping stone toward your ultimate goal.
