No Offer - Where to go from here?

I'm currently a sophomore at an IB semi-target (target for consulting). I networked hard, but only landed a few MM interviews. I still have a couple left, but with the SA 2027 process wrapping up, I'm trying to be realistic about next steps. Consulting recruiting is one option, but I'm not in any of the consulting clubs on campus since I leaned heavily into finance recruiting. I have a portfolio analytics internship at a decent-sized AM for this summer, so worst case, I'm just going to grind and try to get a return, but I'm not sure whether there's anything else I should be doing from here.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a roadmap for your situation:

  1. Leverage Your Current Internship:
Your portfolio analytics internship at a decent-sized asset management (AM) firm is a solid foundation. Focus on excelling in this role and building strong relationships with your team. A return offer here could be a great fallback option, and the experience will strengthen your resume for future recruiting cycles.

  2. Networking is Key:

    • Continue networking aggressively. Reach out to alumni, professionals, and anyone in your network who can provide guidance or referrals.
    • Use LinkedIn to connect with people in investment banking (IB) and consulting. Even if the SA 2027 process is wrapping up, smaller firms or boutiques may still have openings later in the cycle.
    • Don’t hesitate to ask for informational interviews or advice—it’s a great way to build rapport and uncover hidden opportunities.
  3. Explore Smaller Firms and Unpaid Opportunities:

    • Many smaller firms, including boutique IBs and private equity shops, hire interns later in the cycle. Some may even consider unpaid internships, which, while not ideal, can provide valuable experience and connections.
    • Keep an eye out for late-spring or summer opportunities, as some firms may have unexpected openings.
  4. Consulting as a Backup Plan:

    • While you’re not in consulting clubs, it’s not a dealbreaker. Start preparing for consulting case interviews now. Resources like WSO’s consulting prep guides or case interview bootcamps can help you get up to speed.
    • Reach out to consulting firms that recruit at your school and express interest in their sophomore or junior programs. Highlight transferable skills from your finance experience.
  5. Plan for Junior Year Recruiting:

    • If you don’t secure an IB or consulting internship this summer, use the experience you gain at the AM firm to position yourself for junior-year recruiting.
    • Consider certifications like the CFA Level 1 or financial modeling courses to enhance your technical skills and show commitment to the field.
    • Refine your resume and practice behavioral and technical interview questions to be fully prepared for the next cycle.
  6. Stay Positive and Persistent:

    • It’s not uncommon to face setbacks in competitive fields like IB and consulting. Use this as a learning experience and keep pushing forward.
    • Remember, many professionals have taken non-linear paths to success. Focus on building your skills, expanding your network, and staying adaptable.

By following these steps, you’ll maximize your chances of landing a strong opportunity, whether in IB, consulting, or another related field. Keep grinding—you’ve got this!
