NYU Econ CAS for High Finance?

I got into NYU for econ and am wondering if it is possible to place into high finance (including IB). I read that NYU has one of the top econ programs. How hard is getting into the stern clubs and does CAS have its own finance clubs? I'm transferring so I know it's tricky but want to know everything there is to know so that I'm prepared.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, NYU's Economics program in the College of Arts and Science (CAS) can serve as a solid foundation for breaking into high finance, including investment banking (IB). However, there are a few key points to consider:

  1. Stern Clubs and Access:
While Stern's finance/business clubs are highly regarded and provide excellent networking opportunities, gaining access as a CAS student can be challenging. Stern clubs often prioritize Stern students, and competition for membership is fierce. That said, some clubs may allow non-Stern students to join, especially if you demonstrate strong interest and relevant skills.

  2. CAS Finance Clubs:
CAS itself does not have as many dedicated finance clubs compared to Stern. However, you can still leverage broader NYU resources, such as university-wide organizations or events, to network and build your finance knowledge.

  3. Networking and Preparation:
As a transfer student, you'll need to be proactive. Attend networking events, career fairs, and workshops hosted by NYU. Additionally, consider taking advantage of resources like the WSO Elite Modeling Package or other financial modeling courses to strengthen your technical skills.

  4. Recruiting Challenges:
Breaking into high finance from CAS is possible but requires extra effort compared to Stern students. Focus on building a strong resume, securing internships early, and networking aggressively. Highlight your quantitative and analytical skills from the econ program to stand out.

  5. Alternative Pathways:
If access to Stern clubs proves difficult, look for external finance-related opportunities in NYC. The city offers a wealth of networking events, internships, and professional organizations that can help you build connections in the industry.

In summary, while being in CAS may present additional hurdles compared to Stern, it is entirely possible to break into high finance with the right strategy, preparation, and persistence.
