Offer Letter Wait
Interviewed for an analyst role with an MM IB in NY last month, and had the superday shortly after Thanksgiving. The same day, HR called and said I’d made the cut. I was sent pre-hire docs that would be filled out before an offer letter was sent, and told that I should be starting early 2026.
Fast forward to now. I still have not received the offer letter, and have communicated my concerns to HR, who have assured me that I have nothing to worry about, just that it’d take time (I looked up the role online and it had been taken down, a good sign perhaps). Given the time of year, it would make sense that no one is free to handle my offer letter. However, my prospective start date is fast approaching, and I’m still antsy about the background check continuing for a while after I’m supposed to start. I also know I don’t have the offer in hand, but I’m worried about interviewing elsewhere while I wait.
What should I do? Am I too worried?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your concerns are valid, but there are steps you can take to navigate this situation effectively:
Follow Up Strategically: Continue to follow up with HR, but space out your communications to avoid appearing overly anxious. A weekly check-in is reasonable. Politely ask for a timeline on when you can expect the offer letter and background check completion.
Document Everything: Keep a record of all communications with HR, including dates and details of conversations. This will be helpful if any issues arise later.
Consider the Time of Year: As you mentioned, the holiday season can slow down processes. Many firms operate with reduced staff during this period, so delays are not uncommon.
Explore Other Opportunities: While waiting, it’s wise to keep your options open. Interviewing elsewhere doesn’t mean you’re abandoning this opportunity—it’s about protecting yourself in case things fall through. A verbal offer without a written one is not guaranteed.
Evaluate the Firm’s Process: Delays in issuing an offer letter could indicate inefficiencies in the firm’s hiring process. Use this as a factor in assessing whether this is the right place for you.
Communicate Your Concerns: If your start date is approaching and you still haven’t received the offer letter, express your concerns to HR. Frame it professionally, emphasizing your eagerness to join and your need for clarity to plan accordingly.
Prepare for Background Checks: Ensure all your documents and references are in order to avoid further delays once the background check begins.
While it’s natural to feel anxious, taking proactive steps and maintaining open communication with HR will help you manage the situation. At the same time, don’t hesitate to explore other opportunities to safeguard your career trajectory.
