Ops or Tech

Hi guys,
I go to a total non-target University of Michigan Engineering (Non-Ross) and only have a 3.5GPA which is around top 15% in the school but obviously a crappy GPA relative to other majors so I guess it really doesnt matter.
I am a sophomore and applied to S&T but got a choice in Ops or Tech at a BB. Both of them would be supporting roles in S&T.

a) The ops job is just normal ops.
b) The tech job is said to be quantitative

My questions are:

  1. Which one will set me up for junior S&T SA better?

  2. Which one is more prestigious (I know both aren't but I might apply to non banking jobs in the future too, which one is more highly regarded when I apply to non-finance jobs like consulting?)

  3. Is BO still really really easy to come by in this market?

  4. Am I behind most people in junior SA recruiting for S&T next year?

  5. Am I screwed/pigeonholed (This is my only job offer, I aimed too high)?

  6. Which one is generally considered better? Tech or Ops?

Thanks in advance

thanks for the replies so far, just wondering if it is possible for you guys to be more specific on some of the questions. I actually decided that finance could be a possible career path for me not long ago so I am still kinda clueless as you can see :)

  1. quant
  2. there is no such thing as prestige in BO
  3. relatively, yes
  4. yes and no. The majority of sophomores will have trouble getting summer stints bc it's incredibly competitive out there, but for those who are either at top targets i.e. h/y/p/s/w, or are lucky enough to live in a city where they can work in some FO role for free e.g. NYC, they may have experience that makes them stronger candidates. So you aren't far behind the majority of sophomores out there, but you are (or will be) far behind the people who are most likely to get offers
  5. not necessarily--being at the bb will give you the opportunity to network like crazy. you're young and just got interested in the field so you have the right to be curious and reach out to a bunch of people. That being said, a BO position doesn't open any doors.
  6. If you want to jump to FO, then I would say ops I suppose (depending on the group) bc you'll have to garner some knowledge as to how the group you support functions (and therefore what it takes to succeed in the group).
