Career Resources
F500 Rotational Leadership Programs such as GE's FMP would be good.
Yes they are both good finance jobs. Even working for corporate development/strategy for a company would be above average.
The world has changed. And we must change with it.
i go to a Chicago target with no undergrad business school... whats a good strategy to break into corpfin at F500? are most of these internships already taken?
the first thing you can do is apply through the company's career website ...i believe many are still open into march/april
F500 internships are open til march/april.
Friends at BB (Associates, VP, Directors) recommend fresh monkeys to go to F500 internships to build industry specific experience. After a few years, BB recruit them into IBD for those industry specific groups. In other words, get to skip the Analyst and sometimes Associate roles.
I really doubt you would be able to lateral into and skip the analyst or associate level by working in F500 corp fin for a couple of years. Maybe if you do F500 corp fin for 3-5years, get into a top 10 MBA program, and join the an IBD industry group as an associate that your F500 was in.
I had a few (4 to be exact) friends that I know who have done this. Personal experience, but what i said was probably a comment based on my skewed perception. do anything you can to skip the analyst role though.
as others have said:
if you wanted IB, you can go into corporate finance and work in M&A dept. exxon or cisco for example do lots of acquisitions and need mbas to do valuations, etc.
if you wanted to go into asset mgmt, you can go into corp. finance and work in treasury department.
insurance companies have rotational leadership programs through their finance dept.
If you're looking to get into ibanking through one of these other programs, I would strongly suggest first inquiring directly via phone about internships from even the smallest boutiques on the street. ANY banking experience is huge in this market climate.
I did this one summer as an undergrad and it was instrumental in helping me ultimately land a FT at a bigger firm. The work experience is excellent even if the deal flow isn't what you'd see at a BB. The fact that you worked for free is something else that you can speak to if it comes up why you weren't retained FT as an SA. Explaining that a job FT there was never really an option but you wanted the experience shows great initiative and can speak volumes about your work ethic and drive.
Good luck and keep you chin up even if things don't appear to be falling in place.
