People don't care about prestige anymore?

I so often hear about "prestige" in the context of finance / consulting / law-jobs.

But what kind of prestige are you actually experiencing in your day-to-day life? I always felt prestige maxed out in college, where people were literally impressed by others having nice logos on their linkedin as internships.

But in adult life? I see two cases:

  1. Either you are in your social-bubble where literally everyone went to a target school and is now working at a top bank/top consulting firm. I never really felt in those circles that someone really was impressed that somebody works at GS/McK or BX/KKR - so many people in those circles do and I feel like people are getting more cynical about it (i.e., knowing that people get grinded in such seats and don't really feel a particular envy aobut it)
  2. If you are not in your social bubble (say during sports, some other activities, neighbours) I feel like that normal people literally don't care about work. It is a general 3-4 minute convo at the beginning "what do you do for work? oh, you are in banking? thats cool - must be good with numbers" .. if it is in dating I feel like both finance/consulting even come with some sort of negative stigma because you get bucketed in the insufferable "finance/consulting"-bro bubble - like its not the 1980s anymore where finance was considered as particularly prestigious/masculine. Most people associate some IG/TikTok personalities now with finance rather than a Michael J. Fox type of character

I am genuinely curious, how is prestige at this point important to you? Prestige meant the world to me in college, but at this point in time it feels like its such an elusive concept. Like literally nobody cares - it doesn't make you cooler/tougher.

Making a decision to change jobs now and for the first time I just try to max out on money and lifestyle rather than brand-name.
