Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and tips for preparing for a technical/behavioral interview with Houlihan Lokey, especially for a Portfolio Valuation role:

Technical Questions:

  1. Advanced Technicals:

    • Expect more advanced and intense technical questions compared to standard interviews. Be prepared to discuss detailed financial concepts and valuation techniques.
    • You should be able to build and explain models such as DCF (Discounted Cash Flow) and LBO (Leveraged Buyout).
  2. Sector-Specific Knowledge:

    • Be ready to discuss recent market events and their implications for the sector you are interviewing for. This could include understanding how depreciation flows through the three financial statements or other sector-specific technical questions.
  3. Restructuring and Debt Advisory:

    • If your role involves restructuring or debt advisory, familiarize yourself with resources like Stephen Moyer's "Distressed Debt Analysis" and Houlihan Lokey's case studies. These will give you a good overview of the bankruptcy system and the mechanics of debt.

Behavioral Questions:

  1. Classic Behavioral Questions:

    • Prepare for situational questions such as "walk me through your resume," "tell me about a time when...," and "walk me through a deal." These are common in both SA (Summer Analyst) and FT (Full-Time) interviews.
    • Make sure to have quality answers for any deals you were involved in, including buyer/seller rationale, sector trends, valuation, your responsibilities, and risks.
  2. General Fit and Motivation:

    • Be ready to discuss your fit for the role and your motivation for joining Houlihan Lokey. This includes understanding the firm's culture and how your background aligns with their needs.

General Tips:

  • Preparation: Master all sections and topics in your guides. The technical portion requires a deep understanding, so thorough preparation is key.
  • Confidence and Enthusiasm: Confidence in your answers and enthusiasm for the role can make a significant difference. Practice speaking clearly and confidently about your experiences and technical knowledge.
  • Mentorship and Networking: Seek advice from mentors or peers who have gone through similar interviews. They can provide valuable insights and help you prepare effectively.
