Post MBA - Do you regret not doing tech?

I see plenty of guys hating their IBD or Consulting job and i was wondering if you regret not going to a tech startup/company post MBA. What would compensation look like working 5 years at tech company vs. doing consulting for 5 years and then lateraling to that same company?

I'm one year out, not 5, but thrilled with my consulting job. The toolkit I've built in just 6-7 months feels highly relevant and helped develop exactly the sort of thinking I'd need at higher level corporate roles. I'm more comfortable working with data, using data to make quick decisions and in justifying my analysis - which I need to do on an almost daily basis to senior folks.

I've started to consider staying on past my 2 years vs exit ops. Tech isn't in the cards, no interest, but if I were to go to a startup I think I'd be a much more valuable addition after my time in consulting than going in green from business school. It's also developed a new level of hustle and drive that I think is 100% relevant to growing a new business.

I too am a year out of business school. Most of my MBA friends are jealous with those who landed tech jobs at Google or Facebook for product/program management roles because the job itself is more interesting than IB or consulting - I say more interesting because those roles require you to use more of the skills learned from an MBA than just finance for example. Secondly, the pay and hours are good and the industry is growing, which is important when you decide on a career path.

However, I am happy in finance, it fits my personality more...

I can't believe your post didn't get much love. I'm with you - move into tech so that I can work on the "uber of babysitters" or whatever other nonsense? No thanks.

Work in a tech company starting out at 50-70k a year? doing what? "financial analysis" no thanks. Do I wish I i majored in comp sci? maybe

"Grass is always greener" mentality is strong among MBAs. I would discount any opinion that wasn't 10+ years out.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

These posts confuse me so much

I am going into finance because I love finance. Seriously, I love it. I can't imagine thinking later "gee, I sure wish I went into this field I like less just because it seems cushier or something"

Am I crazy? Why are these people going into finance if they have some weird yearning for another industry?

No.

I have been an Apple fanboy my whole life (we went long when it was single digit IIRC), so I would have loved to be on the Mac marketing team, but otherwise, no, no desire at all to live in the Bay Area - and what the hell is there to do in Tech (the kind that hires MBAs) if you're not there?

The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be the shepherd.

I like your post because it highlights the ridiculous need to live in the Bay Area. I'm with you, I would never live there and I've worked in tech for most of my life (I'm now at a BB). Most people don't realize what the Bay Area is like and rarely factor in CA taxes and SFO COL into the equation. That should make 99.5% of the tech jobs out there completely unappealing if you have your wits about you.
