Pre-FT Associate lateral ...
I was a BB summer associate in T1 city this last summer with a strong group and received a return. Due to familial circumstances, it is now fairly important that I get to a different city (think ATL, HOU, CLT, etc.)
Would this even be possible to FT lateral like this pre-FT starting? How would I go about it? I know lateral FT recruiting happened shortly after summer offers went out initially, so I am wondering if I am just going to have to postpone a lateral move until after my 1st year.
Any feedback is appreciated.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, making a pre-FT lateral move as an associate is challenging but not impossible. Here’s how you can approach it:
Timing and Market Realities: FT lateral recruiting typically happens shortly after summer offers are extended, so the window for pre-FT moves may be narrow. If the timeline has passed, you might need to wait until after your first year to make the move.
Networking is Key: Start reaching out to your network in the target city (ATL, HOU, CLT, etc.). Leverage alumni, former colleagues, and any connections you have in those markets. Networking is especially critical for smaller markets where opportunities may not be as widely advertised.
Engage Headhunters: Identify headhunters who specialize in the regions you’re targeting. They often have insights into lateral opportunities and can help position you for roles that align with your circumstances.
Communicate Your Story: Be clear and consistent about your reasons for the move. Highlight the familial circumstances driving your decision and emphasize your commitment to the new location. Firms are more likely to consider you if they believe you’re serious about staying in the new city long-term.
Leverage Your Current Offer: Having a return offer from a strong BB group gives you leverage. It signals to potential employers that you’re a high-quality candidate. Use this to your advantage when discussing opportunities with other firms.
Consider Internal Transfers: If your current firm has offices in your target city, explore the possibility of an internal transfer. While this can be tricky pre-FT, some firms may accommodate such requests, especially if the move benefits the firm (e.g., filling a need in the target office).
Be Prepared for Postponement: If pre-FT lateral opportunities don’t materialize, focus on excelling in your first year. Building a strong track record will make you a more attractive candidate for lateral moves later on.
Remember, smaller markets like ATL, HOU, and CLT often have fewer openings, so persistence and strategic networking are crucial. Good luck!
