Project Manager to Analyst ?

Hello my fellow monkeys,

I am currently a project manager at a BB in the commodities division. I graduated with a degree in chemical engineering but almost immediately realized I wanted to be more client-facing and finance based. I picked up this job just because it got me close to IB but I was wondering what it might take to eventually switch to the FO in a analyst role, another option I have is a family friend that is an MD at a PE Energy firm that is a MM Private placement agent. I know it will be an uphill battle no matter what but I know I am capable of learning what is needed and bending myself into a candidate for firms.

So all in all, I was hoping someone might chime in and tell me what to do or avoid to make it.

Thanks a lot guys.
