Promised lands other than IB/PE?

I know this is weird being on an IB forum, but after seeing soooooo many different posts on how IB is a killer and so is PE, are there any underrated finance roles people just brush over? I’ve noticed a lot of people scoff at better WLB roles that just aren’t prestigious and I’m curious if there’s any routes people are just looking over.

I’ve been reading about asset backed securities and shit like that, it doesn’t have those prestigious exit opportunities but working for 60 hours a week for near the same junior comp doesn’t seem bad. Sure there’s trade offs of course but I’m genuinely curious if anyone on here knows any more sustainable jobs that maybe don’t have the same comp but still have a much better income than other non finance jobs? Could just be wishful thinking of course but any discussion would be helpful

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some underrated finance roles that offer better work/life balance (WLB) and are often overlooked:

  1. Asset Management (AM)

    • Steady Cash Flow: AM provides a steady cash flow for firms.
    • Comparable Pay: The pay at top mutual funds is not drastically different from that at bulge bracket banks.
    • Work/Life Balance: Generally offers a better work/life balance compared to IB and PE.
  2. Back Office Roles

    • Low Stress: These roles are highly underrated, offering low stress and no all-nighters.
    • 9 to 5 Schedule: Typically, these roles have a standard 9 to 5 schedule.
    • Six-Figure Salary: Can eventually pay six figures.
  3. Corporate Roles in Fortune 500 Companies

    • VP of Syndicated Television Network: Involves selling advertising for TV shows, with a relaxed work environment.
    • Non-FP&A Roles: There are many corporate roles outside of FP&A that offer good work/life balance and limited stress.
  4. Wealth Management

    • Client-Focused: Involves managing the wealth of high-net-worth individuals.
    • Better Hours: Generally offers better hours compared to IB and PE.
  5. Endowment Management

    • Stable Environment: Managing endowments for universities or non-profits can be a stable and rewarding career.
    • Focus on Long-Term Investments: Less pressure compared to short-term trading roles.

These roles may not have the same level of prestige or exit opportunities as IB or PE, but they offer a more sustainable work environment and still provide a good income.
