Promotion to MD - Does the risk align with the return anymore?
Trying to figure out if the path to IB MD is even worth pursuing anymore. It seems like you have to be almost superhuman to make it, and even then you can never take your foot off the gas, for money that is good, but not what it once was.
What's the risk? Or do you mean is the hard work commensurate with the return?
The risk that you get fired at the late VP or Director level, after having worked insanely hard for several years, but before the money has gotten especially good or you have the MD title. At that point you will be well past the standard time (i.e. at the conclusion of your analyst program) to transition to PE, industry, or whatever, and many of the things you've gotten good at aren't in particularly high demand.
Yeah makes sense. I guess you can still move into corporate strategy and corporate development though no? So I wouldn't say not in high demand
Industry exit is absolutely a viable and very common route for people ar the senior VP / junior Director level.
At least if youre in a coverage group. Not sure about product groups though as your skillset is pretty specialized.
Out of curiosity, could you illustrate how hard is it to become an IB MD? I understand that it's exceptionally tough as you'll have to compete among your peers (who are already very driven/smart/competitive) for the few positions available.
