Public Sector - AM vs. Budget
For a public sector internship, I have two options. I will either be able to work in the state's Asset Management department focused on real estate policy or the state's budget department. I have attached descriptions of both internships below and would like to know which would seem more "impressive" for IB and which is more front office.
Asset Management Description
1) Maintain, coordinate, and update the State’s building inventory program – Coordinate building inventory submissions from multiple state agencies; assess the accuracy and completeness of the information in the system and recommend and implement appropriate quality control measures; assist in utilizing the state building inventory to determine appropriate agency space needs and respond to public inquiries.
2) Conduct a research project – Investigate the methodologies used by other states to dispose of their surplus real estate; document your findings in a written report; prepare, coordinate and present findings via an oral presentation.
3) Learn about the Legislative Process for the State – Discover what role OPM has in the Legislative Process and how hard work at OPM translates into legislative action.
4) Work with other interns on agency-wide projects – Build relationships with the other interns as well as learn about each person’s unique experience.
State budget internship description
1) Learn about the Budget Division’s role in support of the Governor – See how the budge department provides analyses, evaluations, and recommendations on all issues; including but not limited to policy, economic, labor relations, pensions, revenues and capital financing and how those impact the development and implementation of the State’s financial and programmatic policies.
2) Work with budget staff- Ensure compliance with applicable state laws, administrative policy, legislative intent and Judicial decisions as they relate to agency fiscal budgets.
3) Gain experience in the legislative process for the State– See the role that the Budget Division and OPM have in the legislature, learn techniques used by budget staff to review and make recommendations on legislation.
