Realistic Expectations for a Non-Target

Hi all,

I don't want to write too much about my background as it is very specific, but for some general context; I migrated here at 19, worked a lot of shitty jobs, went to CC and transferred to a mega non-target. Worked even harder, networked and got into a Mid-Tier BB in a decent group.

I just started and I am interested in both GE/Buyout, still deciding where I want to recruit, but I decided to pass on on-cycle, as I went back to my country for the first time in years, so did not have time to prep.

Unfortunately, from my LinkedIn stalking, looks like MF is out of the question, and the people from my group typically leave 1MF, 2-3UMM,3-4MM. However, they all went to good schools, besides me.

Now with that out of the way, I have several questions about the buy-side for my situation.

1) If I lateral to GS/MS, is MF still doable or no?

2) Is off-cycle really that hard? If I get some deals and prep, would I as a non target have better chances off cycle or on cycle?

3) Do I wait until next year on cycle? But if I do, do I have to do 3 years banking and start 2026? Or is there 2025 start date?

4) Is it really that much of an issue I come from a non-traditional background? I worked hard to get where I am, matter of fact I know none of these people could probably achieve what I did coming where I am coming from. And now my future prospects for the best of the best is hindered because I did not know what SAT score was till I was 21?

5) Is GE more friendly towards non-targets?

6) Is GE>HF possible or no?

I am just sad that people in this industry care so much about where I come from. I truly only believed in hard work, good attitude and faith in the Almighty, but now I see that at some places I won't even get looked at because of my life and the hand I was dealt.

I guess my last question is, is buy-side at all possible for me? Where are the funds that will overlook and focus on me?

Thank you to everyone
