Requesting to be connected to another group during networking

Hey WSO. Had a coffee chat with some bankers already, but have been a bit shy to ask to connect with groups that I am more interested in since I don't really want to come off as rude or uninterested in their group and then it would all just be a big waste of time.

Was wondering if any bankers had any opinions on this if you guys were asked to connect a prospect to a group they are interested (for example asking a guy from JPM from Media & Comms to connect me to someone in Healthcare) and if it's something not to mention at all or just ask based on the vibe of the call.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's perfectly fine to ask for a connection to another group, but the key is in how you approach it. Bankers generally understand that candidates may have specific interests, and as long as you frame your request tactfully, it won't come off as rude or uninterested.

Here are some tips to handle this situation effectively:

  1. Express Gratitude First: Start by thanking the banker for their time and insights during the coffee chat. Acknowledge the value of the conversation and what you learned about their group.

  2. Frame Your Interest Positively: Instead of making it seem like you're uninterested in their group, explain that you're exploring different areas within the bank and are particularly curious about another group. For example, you could say, "I really appreciate learning about Media & Comms, and it's been incredibly insightful. I'm also very interested in Healthcare and was wondering if you might know someone in that group who I could speak with to learn more."

  3. Ask for a Recommendation, Not a Favor: Bankers are more likely to respond positively if you ask for a recommendation rather than directly asking for an introduction. For instance, "Do you think there's someone in Healthcare who might be open to a quick chat about their experiences?"

  4. Gauge the Vibe: If the banker seems open and friendly during the conversation, it's a good sign that they might be willing to help. If they seem rushed or disinterested, it might be better to hold off and follow up via email later.

  5. Follow Up Professionally: If they agree to connect you, send a polite follow-up email thanking them again and reiterating your interest in speaking with someone in the other group.

Remember, networking is about building relationships, and most bankers understand the importance of exploring different areas to find the right fit. As long as you're respectful and professional, your request is unlikely to be seen as rude.
