Rising International Junior Feeling Lost and Uncertain

I know this forum has received multiple posts but I just feel so weird because I have done over 100+ networking calls, keeping in mind I am an international student at a non-target in the northeast. Our school is good with a few BBs so I took my path and interviewed for MS Menlo Tech M&A for SA 2025. Being a rising junior, I was not able to secure sophomore summer internship or a IB junior one. I see my friends getting SA 2025 in all FO, BO and other places while I have not been able to secure anything.

I pay part of my own tuition, so had to take a part-time sales and marketing internship at a start-up and unpaid IB internship with a MD where I do not learn anything because I rarely get any calls and he forgets to schedule himself. LinkedIn is so depressing, I see the "national intern day" posts and see successful people ahead me and I have not figured out considering the mock interviews and calls I have done. I've been referred at banks for SA 2025 and have not heard from them, including JPM.

I do not know but wanted to vent. I have cold-called over 150 CEOs of PE shops and banks and have gotten 20 replies, have calls scheduled with VPs on their team and I can see some light but for sophomore summer, I had over 14 interviews for opportunities and got rejected in the final rounds, and got nothing for sophomore summer. My GPA dropped from 3.5 to 3.42 and I feel so lost. I know I have my life ahead of me but I tremble with fear that being an international, no job means I have to leave the country where I have done college jobs to fund my education and work my ass off. I do not know what to say but I'd like to know any success stories or advice, I am trying to develop thick skin to face every obstacle out there.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice that might help you navigate your current situation:

  1. Networking and Alumni Outreach:

    • International Alumni: Reach out to international alumni from your school who are currently in banking. They can provide valuable insights and might be more willing to help another international student. Cold-emailing bankers who might have an international background can also be beneficial.
    • Persistence in Networking: You've already done a commendable job with over 100+ networking calls. Keep up the persistence. Sometimes, it takes just one right connection to make a difference.
  2. Internship Experience:

    • Value of Internships: While you might feel that your current internships are not ideal, any experience is valuable. Even part-time sales and marketing internships can provide transferable skills that are useful in finance.
    • Unpaid Internships: If your unpaid IB internship isn't providing learning opportunities, consider discussing this with the MD. Express your eagerness to learn and ask for more responsibilities or tasks.
  3. Cold-Calling and Reaching Out:

    • Cold-Calling CEOs: It's impressive that you've cold-called over 150 CEOs and received 20 replies. Continue scheduling calls with VPs and other team members. Building these connections can lead to future opportunities.
    • Follow-Up: Ensure you follow up with any contacts you make. Sometimes, persistence in follow-ups can lead to breakthroughs.
  4. Handling Rejections:

    • Thick Skin: Developing a thick skin is crucial. Rejections are part of the process, and each one is a step closer to success. Reflect on each interview to identify areas of improvement.
    • Mock Interviews: Continue with mock interviews to refine your skills. Seek feedback from peers or mentors to improve.
  5. Academic Performance:

    • GPA Management: While your GPA has dropped slightly, it's still within a competitive range. Focus on maintaining or improving it, but don't let it overshadow your overall efforts.
  6. Success Stories and Encouragement:

    • Overcoming Obstacles: Many have faced similar challenges and succeeded. For instance, one user shared how they secured a Business Analyst Intern position at a pharmaceutical multinational after graduation and later received an M&A internship offer.
    • International Student Challenges: It's acknowledged that international students face additional hurdles, but it's possible to overcome them with persistence and strategic networking.

Remember, it's not the end of the world if you don't land an IB offer immediately. There are many paths to success in finance, and sometimes, a non-linear path can lead to unexpected and rewarding opportunities. Keep pushing forward, and don't hesitate to seek support from your network and forums like WSO.

You should congratulate yourself on even being able to secure an MS interview, many cannot do that. As for your point on Linkedin, I know exactly where you are coming from. It's just a circle-jerk on that platform so don't login is my solution. Can't address your other issues but maybe others can.

Hey man, fellow international here. I thought about saying “did you really give your 100%,” but reading your post again made me rethink. I have no doubt that you grinded your ass off.

Because I know that you will continue to grind no matter what, I would say maybe rethink/reassess your strategy. Are your mock interviews/interview prep really helping you improve? Can you figure out why some interviews went the wrong way? All I am trying to say is try to work smarter. Also, just try to keep your gpa high. It is the one thing that you can control with time and effort.

Also know a couple international ppl, although from targets, who landed FT IB gigs with somewhat adjacent junior summer internships. Even know a guy who didnt get a return offer, started working at a smaller shop, then lateraled to BB. All hope is not lost so keep grinding

Good luck

hey man,

sorry for the delayed response, was busy with moving out. I agree with you, my priority is to keep GPA high, even though im taking 500 level classes but I will try my best. Tbh, id love BB FT gigs but anything MM or even UMM gig would work for me man, kinda in a despo situation now
