SA BB IBD 2013

Whats up guys,

I hope all is well and that you all are enjoying the beginning of Fall.

I landed an interview with a BB IBD with its M&A group with a referral from an MD within the group. My inquiry is regarding his “influence” over the interview process. If he truly wants me there, can he get me in there even if I let’s just say do fuck up during the interviews? This scenario is obv hypothetical but I do want to get a sense of his authority in the process. Thanks in advance.

In theory, if he's important enough, he can tell HR to do whatever he wants. But why would he? If you can't get through his company's interview process, are you really worth him putting himself out like that?

GS/MS started early/accelerated/priority interviews earlier this month so I'm assuming this is from those or one of the other BB's that did the same thing

MD most likely will have just gotten the interview for you. He may be able to get you the job with an extra push, but I doubt he would given the reputational risk if you seriously eff up. That said, an interview IS the foot in the door that many people only hope to get, so expecting more may be a little much.

MD is a broad category, with varying degrees of power. Some MDs are expensive white elephants that haven't shot a whale in years and are half a cunthair from someone deciding they should "spend more time with their families." Others are enormous profit centers that the bank will do anything to keep happy. Not all MDs are created equal, Some could probably get you the job no matter what, most couldn't. You still have to show up to the interview and show you can go a few hours without grabbing a secretary's ass or something. I think an MD on your side doesn't guarantee shit, he got you the interview, do yourself a favor and earn the job. If you fuck it up and it's on him, maybe it will work out, maybe not.

Remember, BBs have hundreds of MDs. An analyst class is a couple hundred, maybe. If every MD could lock up a job for every sweaty-palmed "family friend" that asked, no one else would ever make it into an analyst class.

seems like there are differing opinions but i think we can all agree on this: an MD referral will likely guarantee you an interview and sometimes it can guarantee you a degree of preferential treatment when it comes to the interview process but do not bank on it because it is equally likely that you will be judged at the same level as the others being interviewed - impossible to tell what the circumstance is for your specific scenario since it depends on the situation.

ogofnycIdk bro. I'm thinking different, especially since i'm not asking for a job per se. Lets not forget that this is an internship and not a job position, which is minuscule in comparison. I've been asking around and from what I've been told is that if he wants me in there it should not be a problem. Regardless, I'm coming out swinging so fuck it.

Well then, you answered your own question there didn't you, assclown? Why bother to ask if you're just going to believe what you wanted to hear anyways?

Words to the wise:

  1. Never use the word "bro" again. Ever. In your life

  2. Take the interview seriously, and don't let the decision rest on how much pull this MD has

  3. Don't ask questions if you aren't going to listen to answers that don't conform to what you want to hear. If you wanted a rub and tug you should have gone to K Town not WSO
