SA IB 2027 Recruiting Perspective Needed

Stats: At a target school (think HYP), 4.0, with non-trad finance background and got networking done. Got a strong advocate from top BB (i.e. MD, IB C-suite, etc) and finished first round of interviews—didn't go terribly but also not the most perfect interview possible. Was wondering how much push my contact at that firm will have in R1 -> SPD decisions? Been a bit jittery waiting but wanted to hear everyone's thoughts. Appreciate the fact that there are a lot of other people who are in similar boats or are still waiting...

Disclaimer: Yes, I realize that I banked on coming from a target school with good stats too much and didn't realize that networking even from a "pipe-lined" school was that important—I wasn't the typical "Came into college knowing I wanted to do finance" so was a bit slow on understanding how important doing early insights programs, getting referrals were, etc.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation is not uncommon, and there are a few key points to consider:

  1. Impact of Your Advocate: Having a strong advocate, especially someone at the MD or C-suite level, can significantly influence your progression from the first round to Superday. Senior bankers often have considerable sway in the decision-making process, particularly if they actively push for you. However, their influence is not absolute—your interview performance still plays a critical role. If your first-round interview was solid (even if not perfect), your advocate's support could help tip the scales in your favor.

  2. Networking and Follow-Up: It's great that you've built a strong connection with a senior advocate, but don't stop there. Keep in touch with them and others you've networked with at the firm. A quick follow-up email thanking them for their support and updating them on your progress can keep you top of mind. Additionally, if your advocate is willing, they might be able to provide feedback or insights into your performance and next steps.

  3. Jittery Waiting Period: The waiting game is tough, but it's important to stay proactive. Use this time to prepare for potential Superday interviews. Focus on refining your technical skills (e.g., M&I Advanced Guides, BIWS 400 Technicals) and behavioral responses. Even if this opportunity doesn't pan out, being prepared will set you up for success in future interviews.

  4. Reflection on Early Insights: While you may feel like you were late to the game in terms of early insights programs and networking, it's clear you've made significant progress. Many candidates from target schools initially underestimate the importance of networking, but you've already taken steps to address this. Moving forward, continue leveraging your network and building relationships within the industry.

In summary, your advocate's push can be a game-changer, but your interview performance and follow-up efforts also matter. Stay optimistic, keep preparing, and maintain those connections. Good luck!

So an c-suite exec at an IB firm referred/backed you yet you had zero networking done lol and to top it off didn’t do well on the first round. Can’t make this up lmao
