SA2026 - Am I screwed?
I have a sub-par GPA, think 3.3-3.4, and have only done around 5 networking calls this year. I also have two non finance interships with startups. With how early the application deadlines are, is it possible to network my way through this? The only bright-side is I go to a okayish target school. What should I focus on to improve my chances this recruiting season?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
GPA: A 3.3-3.4 GPA is on the lower side, especially for target schools where competition is fierce. While it's not impossible, you need to compensate for this with other strengths. Highlight any upward trends in your GPA or a higher major GPA if applicable.
Networking: Five networking calls are not enough. Networking is critical, especially with early deadlines. Aim for 2-3 calls per week moving forward. Focus on alumni from your school or those with similar backgrounds. Use LinkedIn and your school’s alumni database to identify potential connections. Tailor your outreach messages to show genuine interest and commonalities.
Internships: While non-finance internships at startups are valuable, they don’t directly align with investment banking. Leverage these experiences to highlight transferable skills like problem-solving, adaptability, and teamwork. However, you need to secure a finance-related internship ASAP, even if it’s at a boutique or unpaid role. This will help bridge the gap in your resume.
Application Strategy: Early deadlines mean you need to act fast. Focus on regional boutiques or smaller firms where competition might be less intense. These can serve as stepping stones to larger firms later.
Interview Prep: Be ready for technical questions during networking calls or interviews. Bankers often test candidates during calls to gauge their knowledge. Use resources like the WSO Technical Guide to prepare.
Optimism and Persistence: Rejections are part of the process. Stay optimistic and keep pushing. Networking and persistence can often outweigh a sub-par GPA.
