SA26 Networking Timelines

Hi - starting this thread to learn more about networking timelines at EBs that are expected to open by the end of this year.

Recently read about spreadsheets being used at EBs for bankers (analysts and associates) to log their calls for referrals.

Would really appreciate more info on this, specifically if you guys have received these spreadsheets yet? In Sept, a connection at an EB told me that it's too early to be introduced to other bankers as they might forget having taken the call.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on networking timelines and strategies for EBs (Elite Boutiques):

  1. Networking Timelines:

    • End of Year Openings: Networking for summer analyst positions at EBs typically ramps up towards the end of the year. It's crucial to start early to build relationships and stay on the radar of bankers.
    • Spreadsheets for Tracking: Creating and maintaining a detailed Excel tracker sheet is highly recommended. This should include:
      • Contacts: List of bankers (analysts, associates, VPs, MDs) with their contact information.
      • Interaction Logs: Dates and notes from each interaction or call.
      • Follow-Up Dates: Schedule follow-ups to ensure you stay in touch without overwhelming the bankers.
  2. Networking Strategies:

    • School Resources: Utilize your school's finance-based career team to get contact information of alumni working in IB. Organize these contacts by their roles and plug them into your Excel sheet.
    • LinkedIn: Use your school's LinkedIn alumni section to find and connect with alumni at various banks. Hyperlink their LinkedIn profiles in your tracker for easy access.
    • Generic Templates: Prepare two generic email templates:
      • One for people whose emails you already have.
      • Another for cold outreach via LinkedIn or other platforms.
  3. Timing and Approach:

    • Early Introduction: While it might seem early to be introduced to other bankers, it's important to strike a balance. Too early, and they might forget; too late, and you might miss the window. Regular, spaced-out follow-ups can help maintain the connection.
    • Persistence: Networking is a numbers game. Reach out to a large number of bankers, as not all will respond. Consistent follow-ups can lead to unexpected opportunities.
  4. Additional Tips:

    • Networking Events: Attend networking events as early as possible. Being among the first to apply or connect can make a significant difference due to the high volume of applications.
    • Internal CV Flags: Before applying for summer analyst positions, confirm some internal CV flags through networking to strengthen your application.

By following these strategies and maintaining a well-organized tracker, you can effectively navigate the networking timelines and increase your chances of securing a summer analyst position at an EB.

U wont know when the spreadsheets are out unless u are actually personal friends with the bankers. Just do chats now and hit them back just before apps are due to open.
