Second week: should I pay lunch?

Hello monkeys,

I recently joined a M&A division at a bank. There is this analyst who has helped us since day one, setting up our accounts, helped to answer our questions and he was so keen as to explain how the bank functions, presenting the team etc. I would like, in my second week, to thank him and offer to buy him food and have the chance to possibly get staffed with more interesting things, as well as using it as a way to say thanks for all the help. What do you think about it?

Definitely dont offer to buy him lunch. It'd be a nice gesture vis-a-vis one of your fellow interns (possibly one that has been at the firm longer than you), but not towards a superior. Instead, offer to bring in coffee for the two of you / ask to go for a coffee / beer with him (he'll most likely pay in both instances anyway, but thats ok, just say thank you and thats it).

Since he will make a LOT more than you, there will be no possible scenario that you will generate gratitude by offering to pay for him, instead you'll most likely just irritate him or even worse - humiliate him in front of other analysts (again, i know it is not your intention).

Instead, try to be the best intern possible, try and support him in any way you can (once you have finished all your actual assignments) and most importantly: deliver work that is 100% correct, triple-checked and safe to be trusted blindly by your analyst (because thats what seperates great interns from regular interns imho).
