Shooting Mouth to ED/MD

Hi Monkeys,

Has it ever happened to you to have one too many (all-nighter) and to shoot mouth to ED/MD?

Lately, I have been pulled into a nasty deal, and after 2 weeks of consistent 3/4 ams I lost my sh** one day. After working tirelessly on a book, I mentioned half-jokingly that *"if the summer bonus isn't good I am gonna leave"*. I got hit with a witty comeback that it *"thanks for flagging, will make sure it will be the lowest possible"*. Not sure if in the end it was received as a usual banter as I have a good rep and work my a** off, or more seriously. Regretting it now, but sh** happens and cannot take it back.

Has something similar happened to you? How did you navigate it after?

On the corporate side of things, had an a**hat of a VP. Was grinning ear-to-ear the day I heard he got sh*t-canned. I did feel underappreciated for the amount of work I do vs. how much I was being paid and let him know. He brushed it off but wasn't apprehensive.

Despite us not getting along, he didn't hold back on approval when my manager put me up for a promotion.

If this was a response while WFM, it can be 50/50. Witty comeback or they might mean it. I have seen someone I know who gave a response like this in a video meeting with an exec and soon decided to "quit" the company after a call with HR.

I’ve seen analysts say and do some absolute crazy things and they had no influence at all on their bonus nor their promotion track. The common factor is usually: If the analyst is a strong performer and well-liked, they can get away saying / doing the exact same thing that would get a poor performer in trouble. If you’re cranking and doing a good job, the ED/MD will ultimately chalk it off to your being tired. If they already hated your guts, they could use this as an opportunity to strike out at you. Unlikely though, (s)he has most likely already forgotten about the whole thing.

That said — usually someone wouldn’t make a joke about giving you the lowest possible bonus if they actually meant it. While a lot more context is needed to judge the situation, I would bet that you’re safe if I had to guess.

If there's a witty comeback like that, the guy clearly gets it, this won't be a problem. People say shit like that all the time and given how hard you're working not unexpected. I know a top bucket analyst who publicly threatened to quit all the time and they prob paid him a little more just to make sure he didn't actually leave

I wouldn't even think about this one, was reading thinking you were going after him for something personal
