Should I contact the MD?

I came from a non-target school, worked 1.5 yrs at a related job and want to make the transition into DCM. I networked with an alumni who's an associate at the boutique and he referred me to a job and gave me the email of the HR(VP) and asked me to contact the HR after I finish the online application. When I emailed the HR, she told me the job had been filled and suggested me to apply for another similar role posted 2 days ago, and she sent my resume to the HR who's in charge of that position.

Even though I'm qualified for that role, I'm still concerned that the HR in charge of that role will disregard me because I'm an international student and need sponsorship for H1B. Then I did some research online and to my surprise, the MD (Dept. GM) was also my alumni. Should I contact him and treat it just like other normal networking?
