Hi all,

If you are interested in the commodities market it is a great place to start. They usually have a good starting program that teaches you the basics. Pretty well known in the commodity space and excellent place to get your foot in the door. In deciding if you should continue in IB ops or join is completely based on what your end goals are. Do you want to become a trader in equities, FI, fx or something completely different. From what I understand is their program has you move through the back office motions like most comomdity firms to learn the business inside and out then you slowly are given more responsibility. If you don't mind me asking which location is this for?

Hey Captters, really thanks for the insights........well the position is in China....

what I m thinking is, if i wait for another IB ops opening pop up, I probably would get it and from what I understand here, doing IB ops would never have a chance moving forward to become an Equity, FI or FX trader, but if I choose join Trafigura, I will be starting learning commodity trading, sth I hv no idea if I will like it or not.....and from what I know about the postion at Trafigura, it is not a Trader Program, but just an analyst role at their deal desk, being move to trader is just some unknown future option......

you do not want to stay in ib ops. take this spot now, come back to your bb later once you start trading

I'm on the pursuit of happiness and I know everything that shine ain't always gonna be gold. I'll be fine once I get it

From briefly looking at the deals desk analyst role it seems to be an excellent place to start. From the description you start off with you being responsible for removing outright price and spread risk on all physical businesses. You also have communication with traders and senior management which is extremely helpful. I have a friend/alumni who works for Trafigura over in India as a coal trader and he loves it there. Even though he's in India, he describes the company as a great place for internal movement and entrepreneurial. I think commodities trading or the commodities market is a great place to learn and is a place I one day want to move into. I have a few friends in that specific part of the industry and they really enjoy it.

In my personal opinion I think it would be a good idea to take the position if you have any interest in the commodities space. And do not discount yourself if you really want to stay in ops...I know plenty of people who have moved from ops to trading albeit it is getting harder as the industry is changing so much. It takes hard work, luck, and networking but definitely isn't impossible. PM me or just let me know if you have any other questions. I think it is a great company to work for an excellent learning environment especially in China.

Are you fucking kidding me. Traf trading role > any role in a bulge bracket at the moment.

Fyi, you won't be trading anything with them anytime soon.

If I may ask, how exactly did you get the offer? Would you mind sharing the job description? If it is the traditional deals desk analyst spot (with responsibilities mentionned above) and not somethign more back-officey related to the deals desk, it's an extremely good offer, which is why I am a bit sceptic that someone from BB Ops with no real motivation to work in commodity trading could land that job. Just to give you an idea, if it really is that position you could potentially make (significantly) more money than a FO IB analyst (in your first year). I mean there are so many people with stellar back-grounds that would kill for that job, to compare it with an IB ops gig seems ridiculous.

-f4tality/guys, I justb pull out the JD on their website, pretty much what they told what this role is, to my understanding, it is just a trading supporting ops role. Anybody pls make it more clarify for me? if this roles sound more promising than IB OPS or just another dead-water......

JD 1. Ensure accuracy and timeliness of commercial p&l reporting; 2. Maintain Chinese domestic marked to market report for forward business; 3. Ensure the integrity of data capture in the in house computer systems; 4. Monitor derivative futures positions used to hedge physical business to ensure price and foreign exchange risk is eliminated and commercial opportunities are exploited to the maximum; 5. Ensure accuracy of commercial terms in contracts , maintain unsigned contract list 6. Ad hoc tasks.

if you don't know and are not enthusiastic about what they are doing, your chance to move to trading role is very small. Basically, you have to get well prepared and then wait a long time for someone to leave, and take his spot. that might be 3 - 5 years before you can step into trading. Indeed, a lot of people in functions like operation, credit, finance want to move to trading role. so, it's not gonna be easy. you should talk about this with human resources to see if they have something line up for your development in this role.

i'm kind of interested in the pay of this position? would you mind to share? I heard from friend at Trafi shanghai, they get local pay and not comparable to BB, just close to FMCG like P&G, nestle

well, pyt negotiation is under way ....i would agree Trafi payment not comparable to BB, but BB's IBD, Trading department, if talking about BB OPS dept. here, pyt is horrible...but I think this job offer from Trafi deals desk is still more like a trading support ops role. so i guess pay would be similar.....
