Signs that you won't get a return offer

Currently SA at a BB. Was wondering what are the usual signs that you won't be receiving a return offer?

During midsummer review, I received pretty strong feedback from the intern manager (however, I feel that he was being overly nice and didn't point out any of my weaknesses even though I know I could improve the quality of my deliverables, etc). When I asked my intern manager what I could improve on for the second-half of the internship, all he said was "just continue to focus on getting to know more people across the firm and building relationships".

Given his vague response, am I screwed for a return?

Not necessarily. Some groups don't expect that much from an intern and realize that interns aren't going to be fully polished. Even though you may think you have areas to improve on you may still be developing at a good enough level where there isn't much concern once you return full time. The manager's comment on getting to know more people is probably a nudge to network more with the group so people know you. At this point in the summer we know who the favorites are to return and we tend to gravitate and talk more with those interns to make sure they return. If you don't feel that you are getting that treatment then you should network more with your group to make sure your chances are higher to get the return offer.

To be fair, a lot of things are said as subtext in business, and OP is new to the job and job security is totally uncertain. So I understand the stress.

In my opinion I would focus on your work product — if you’re reliable and are actually helpful, that is far and beyond the most important thing, at least in my experience, as long as a few people can say they worked with you and you were relaxed to work with.

You as you are is good enough as long as the work gets done and you don’t fuck with people.Just relax! And be helpful.

This is probably stupid and I’m just stressed out because of the current market. But I got my mid summer and I was told I’m in track with very few things to improve on. Does this mean that unless I do something really stupid or some crazy fuckup I should get my return?

OP is an idiot, but for others reading midsummer review is when you will find out if you're being canned. If they bring up highly specific issues regarding work product that means one of your teams specifically reported that in and unless you have a dramatic turnaround that team will not support you coming back. On the other end there are comments about "attitude." If you get that you're a goner, it's the catch-all term if someone just doesn't like you and decided you're done. If you hear that keep trying in the internship so you can get good references from those who like you but start networking elsewhere and get into processes before you officially don't have a return. I know many people who have gotten axed from their internships, often due to a single senior person hating them, but landed at equal or better companies afterwards. It sucks but you can make it work.

This one is such an easy fix. Tomorrow, as people walk in say good morning with a smile and ask how their weekend was.

Next, send out 5 emails asking to get coffee with various members of your team (don’t put them all on the same day) and ask them questions about themselves and have them do 90% of the talking. Just ask what they did over the weekend, what they do for fun, what they like most about the team /industry, and their summer vacation plans.

If there is a lull during the day, ask to get coffee with the analyst sitting next to you.

I had a similar issue but if you can carry a 1x1 conversation you’ll be fine and people will brush it off as you’re shy in big groups but aren’t anti-social.
