Singapore to Switzerland Finance (Preferably IB)

Hi all, I am currently doing a law internship before I progress to upper high school in Singapore (A levels). I realised that law ain't for me (even though I am interning at a more litigation type firm) because I'm interested in finance, especially given my background in investing from when I was 14 and I am getting into forex now. WLB for law is not going to improve as I progress in Law, especially more so in BigLaw and in Singapore (crazy work hours without better comp). Throughout my career I'd want better WLB but I do understand that WLB in IB sucks but its like auditing and accountancy- career starter (My father was an auditor before becoming an accountant and moving to finance director at a small international higher education institute)). So, I aim to study at HSG (St Gallen) and work in Switzerland but the qn is what bachelors. Should I study Business, or economics there? Additionally, any advice for me? Also, what are good exit opps for good wlb but a decent salary? I know you have to participate in the rat race to get out, especially since my family isn't very wealthy so I want to get a job that allows me to have enough capital to invest to sustain and grow my wealth. If I am doing something wrong here pls don't get too mad, i'm q new to WSO.
(PS. I am starting to learn German now and due to my country's policies, I am set to be conscripted for 2 years at 18)

Btw i got 4 A2s and 2 A1s for O levels

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Bachelor's Choice at HSG (St. Gallen):

    • If you're aiming for a career in finance, particularly Investment Banking (IB), the Business Administration program at HSG is a better fit. It provides a strong foundation in finance, accounting, and management, which are critical for IB roles.
    • Economics is more theoretical and may not align as directly with the practical skills needed for IB. However, it could be a good option if you're interested in roles like economic research or policy-making.
  2. Language Skills:

    • Learning German is a smart move. As highlighted in previous WSO threads, German is almost a prerequisite for finance roles in Switzerland, especially in IB. It will also help you integrate better into Swiss culture and improve your employability.
  3. Work-Life Balance (WLB) and Exit Opportunities:

    • IB in Switzerland offers a better WLB compared to other financial hubs like London or New York. However, the trade-off is that bonuses as a percentage of base salary are lower, and exit opportunities to Private Equity (PE) or Hedge Funds (HF) are more limited.
    • If you're looking for good WLB with a decent salary, consider transitioning to roles in Asset Management (AM), Corporate Finance, or Wealth Management after a few years in IB. These roles are prominent in Switzerland and offer a more balanced lifestyle.
  4. Career Path Strategy:

    • Your plan to use IB as a "career starter" is solid. It will provide you with the skills, network, and capital to transition into roles with better WLB.
    • Given your interest in investing, you might also explore roles in Equity Research or Portfolio Management later in your career.
  5. Conscripted Service:

    • Use your conscription period to continue learning German and building your financial knowledge. Consider taking online courses or certifications (e.g., CFA Level 1) to stay ahead.
  6. Additional Advice:

    • Networking is crucial. Start building connections early, especially with alumni from HSG who are working in IB or finance roles in Switzerland.
    • Internships during your bachelor's program will be key to breaking into IB. Focus on securing internships at top firms, even if they are outside Switzerland initially.

Remember, your background in investing and your proactive approach to learning German already set you apart. Keep building on these strengths, and you'll be well-positioned for a successful career in finance.
