Sophomore Intern with a Catch

Hey everyone, have run myself into a small dilemma here. I'm a STEM major and have just finished my second year, and will be interning at an boutique this summer, under the premise of graduating a year early and starting full-time after my third year.

However, after this past semester (overloaded on classes to try and accomplish this 3-year, and GPA began to slip) and some changes in my financial situation (college is much more affordable due to some inheritance) , I've decided I don't want to graduate a year early anymore, and want to take my fourth year of school. I know this runs directly in the face of starting full-time after my third year, so my goal out of this summer is to instead get a return offer for summer 2019. That's set in stone. The catch is, my firm doesn't know that I want to take my fourth year instead of graduating early, and I'm afraid of any friction I might cause when I have to bring my decision up with a firm that thought they had a chance of getting a full-time employee instead of just an intern for round 2.

I guess my question is: What's the best way to bring this change of life plans up to my firm, and turn a possible full-time offer into a second internship offer? When should I bring it up, how should I talk about it, etc?

Thank you in advance for any advice!

Can you pick up a second major or a concentration of some sort? You could pivot on that.

A boutique may be more willing to be accommodating than a BB with a more rigid junior process, especially if your group likes you. Kill it this summer and then 2ish weeks before you finish, talk to your manager in confidence about his thoughts on you taking the additional year.
