Starting at PJT This Summer — How to Be a Top Intern?

Soon to be joining PJT as a summer analyst. Want to get ahead and make sure I show up prepared, sharp, and ready to add value from day one.

What should I be focusing on now to hit the ground running? Technicals? PowerPoint? Modeling? Would really appreciate any advice from people who’ve been through it.

Goal is to be a solid intern, not just survive the summer. Thanks in advance.

As an intern, you won’t get serious technical responsibility. It’s more about showing up and checking the right boxes than it is trying to impress.

1. Always have a good attitude no matter what

2. Take notes, especially when given instructions

3. Take an active interest in what you’re working on (read up on relevant materials, etc.)

4. Ask how you can be helpful

5. Dress and look the part. Simple is always better, don’t stand out.

6. Be responsive to all communication (10 minutes if possible)

7. Triple check your work and print it out

8. Do the work assigned to you in a timely manner. Never sit on materials or wait to be told, just do what you’re assigned. If someone gives you a two hour assignment at 10pm, finish it instead of waiting until the morning.

9. Always take a first pass, even if you don’t know what to do. It’s better to say, here’s what I’ve come up with and here’s how I’m thinking about this, vs I have no clue, can you give me the answer.

10. For some of you, don’t have more than two drinks at the Conpany event. Someone always gets screwed by this.

if we're 19, can we even drink at company events? working in ib this summer at a bb in nyc

Know how to build an operating model, know how to defend assumptions, and interpret comps, football field and valuations etc.  Intern project at the end will be used to determine your return offer in conjunction with your performance and fit.

Technical assessment at the end of internship?  Could you further elaborate on this?  P.S.  I was at the London office.

Funniest

you made a joke and I came back, no hard feelings. Admit it, it was funny

Grab those coffees for meetings with people across the firm, but don't go overboard and shit yourself.
