Summer Housing - Columbia Apartments
I'm completely unfamiliar with New York City. Would living near Columbia Uni be unrealistic for a summer intern? Also, is $1300/month reasonable for an intern? $1800?

Unless you're living in on campus housing at one of the city's universities, I think you're going to pay at least 1000 bucks a month for a place. I paid 1250 in the E. Village last summer(admittedly nowhere near Columbia) for a studio with at bath and kitchen and no cable. $1800 seems like kind of a lot for me. But I don't know what that area is like.
Finances aside, Columbia's really far uptown. If you plan on going out at all you might want to try and live somewhere further downtown.
is $225/wk
may have gone up slightly from that now though.
I'm pretty sure all the university housing is full. Plus, I need a kitchen to cook.
plimpton hall @ columbia is still open now but its so far uptown that if you really want to go out a lot at nite, you should look for something downtown. last time i checked columbia was 3500 for the whole summer and i'm looking to pay for something cheaper..
Far is relative, and I don't know what's considered 'too far uptown.' 120th too far?
Ehh, I guess it depends on what you're comfortable with...If you take the 1 train it can take you 45 min to get to wall street...obvs much less (20 min or so) if you work in midtown. By cab or black car, you might be looking at a bit longer when you factor in traffic. I'd say add maybe 15 more minutes to each time.
As for walking...forget about it.
