Summer Internship - Is it time to search?

Currently a freshman at a non-target -would you suggest looking for an internship this summer?
Based on other posts I've looked at, most say that December/Janurary is the time to look. Should I begin looking and emailing now?

I was planning on emailing and calling as many PWMs in my area until I find someone who would take me, does that sound like an ideal plan?

Also, what should I expect from the experience? What will I take away and how many hours should I expect to contribute?
