Tax accountant to IB

Really simple here, I’m a tax accountant and have been really interested into making the move into the financial industry these past months. Not in any rush, just wondering what would be the best way to go about it. I’m thinking of IB primarily, also PE and VC, whats the move in your opinion?

Cheers guys!

Breaking into Investment Banking (IB), Private Equity (PE), or Venture Capital (VC) from a tax accounting background is definitely possible, but it requires a strategic approach. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s the move:

  1. Leverage Your Current Experience:

    • Tax accountants, especially those with Big 4 experience, often have transferable skills that IB values, such as financial analysis, attention to detail, and understanding of complex financial structures. Highlight these skills on your resume.
  2. Target Big 4 Advisory/Capital Markets:

    • Transitioning from a tax role to a Big 4 advisory or capital markets team can be a great stepping stone. These roles are more aligned with IB and can make the transition smoother. WSO threads suggest that IB values the work done in Big 4 advisory, especially for junior roles.
  3. Pursue an MBA:

    • An MBA from a top program can be a game-changer. It provides access to on-campus recruiting for IB, PE, and VC roles. Additionally, it helps you build a strong alumni network and gain exposure to finance-specific coursework.
  4. Network Aggressively:

    • Networking is critical. Reach out to professionals in IB, PE, and VC through LinkedIn, alumni networks, or industry events. Informational interviews can help you understand the industry better and potentially lead to referrals.
  5. Gain Relevant Skills:

    • Enroll in finance-specific training programs like the WSO Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp or Private Equity Master Package. These courses can help you build technical skills (e.g., DCF, LBO modeling) and demonstrate your commitment to transitioning into finance.
  6. Consider FP&A or Corporate Development:

    • If IB feels like a stretch initially, roles in FP&A or corporate development can serve as a bridge. These positions often involve financial modeling and strategic planning, which are highly relevant to IB and PE.
  7. Tailor Your Resume:

    • Use templates like the WSO Investment Banking Resume Template to craft a finance-focused resume. Highlight any finance-related projects or achievements from your tax accounting experience.
  8. Be Open to Entry Points:

    • While IB is a common gateway to PE and VC, some professionals transition directly from accounting to these fields. For example, PE firms may value your tax expertise for structuring deals, and VC firms may appreciate your analytical skills.

By following these steps, you can position yourself as a strong candidate for IB, PE, or VC roles. Good luck!
