Timeline - FT Roles

Hi everyone,

I am a Master's student currently applying for FT roles starting from Jan 2024 and came across a paradox:
I recently applied to a series of full-time roles and heard back from a recruiter just today. Whilst I received an offer, unfortunately, it was only available if I were to start in September, but I still have a term of my master's degree before graduating (available from Jan 24). She informed me that their firm will post jobs for January 24 in late November/ early December and was wondering if that is normally the case? I specified needing UK sponsorship (EU citizen) but she confirmed that it was not an issue.

Similarly, I applied to all top 3 firms (JPM-GS-MS) for analyst positions (not IB but less competitive fields like risk or even ops) with referrals but got rejected. I am finishing a master's from a top uni (Geneva + St. Gallen) with a top GPA and have already worked as an analyst and intern in comm trading, private equity, and the United Nations trade division. Stellar reference letters from every manager I have worked with.

Interested to hear your thoughts on this

If they really want you as a candidate, they wouldn't require you to apply again. Instead, they would say that they believe you would be a great fit for the firm but that they will only sign people for the January opening in late November / early December. As such, they want to keep in touch until then and are happy to provide you with a contract in late November / early December.

Very weird of them to ask you to apply again since they obviously think you're fit for the role if they offered you FT for September. Did someone from HR tell you this? HR are totally useless and will never ever help you in any kind of way. If this was communicated to you by a HR person, I would highly recommend that you get in touch with someone you interviewed with from the actual team you're recruiting for. At the end of the day, they are the ones that will decide whether you get hired or not. Surely, HR can put up some BS around the timing of the contract and you having to submit a formal application etc. but in the end they have no decision power in an issue like this.

That was a recruitment agency and yes they did tell me that and we have set up another meeting towards the end of November to see what's available then for January onwards, however, this specific opportunity had to be filled now and the fund only had one vacancy. What I am most curious about are however  the top 3 - I did not even make it to a first-round interview despite having solid employee referrals... Wondering if the timeline is wrong on my end or if I am missing something else?
