Tips for group interview?
Well, the last step for this company is a group interview. Basically, the final 5 of us are going to be interviewed in the same room, and the same time (all of us are from the same class). Any tips? I think it might make it a bit tougher seeing as though everyone is in your class.
A friend of mine who is also interviewing asked the HR lady how many of us they will be taking, she said that she cannot give a number because she doesn't want to stress him out, but that they are not just taking one.
Just be yourself and know your stuff. If you answer all of your technicals correctly and have a good personality, you have a good shot. These interviews are mainly to see how you react and if you get nervous. Other kids might "take" your answer and you'll have to think on your feet, so be honest and don't prepare so much for the fit questions. Just take the fit questions in stride and be ready for anything.
How I handled group interview in the past:
1) Make a mental note to remember two or three names 2) In a group of 10, I let 4 people answer the question first, then observe the interviewer (s)' reaction. 3) If he likes someone's answer but there is room for improvement, I jump in and pick up from that person's answer and add " In addition to what XXX said, I think/believe ....". As I speak, I look at XX in the eyes, subtle smile, then look at the interviewer to finish my answer. 4) In a group interview, there will always be someone who doesn't speak much, who seems shy.
If I choose to be the first one to answer a question, I give my answer, then I throw the ball at the shy person and say "YYY, what do you think? Would you like to add something to the answer"
5) Don't just focus on the interviewer when answering questions. Glance at the group. Give the impression that you are listening to everyone, you are talking to everyone, and you even remember some names.
That's how I handle group interview, someone else might have better ideas.
Display alpha-male dominance. Try to get up any female candidate's skirt and bite the ears off of the other men. If by the end of the session you have successfully bent the others to your every whim and will, they'll know you're a perfect fit for the bullpen.
Group Interview Advice (Originally Posted: 02/26/2017)
I have an upcoming group interview with a hedge fund in NYC. I have never done one before, so would like some advice as to how to succeed in those types of interviews. I am not sure how many other candidates will be present alongside me.
Thanks :)

Let me guess... It's Mandara Capital?
Group interview... so chances are, you will compete against each other. FYI I've been to a few.
My advice, make sure your arithmetic is solid (DO IT IN YOUR HEAD) and you know the current market theme.
Also in they case they do mock trading... know how to quote bid/offer and manage a book with a paper and pen and make sure you know what the people around you bought and sold at.
You didn't even mention this position, so little insight can be provided...
I have done a handful of them but not for finance related jobs. They want to see how well you interact in groups. The structure of the ones that I have done is 2 interviews and 7-12 candidates. They will ask a question and have you take turns answering the question. You don't want to be the one who answers first for every single question that could give a bad vibe. Also don't look board when other candidates are answering the question. I am not sure if my experience would be similar to the one you are doing.
Further to the above, you want to try to highlight every one of the other candidates mistakes whenever possible, don't do it directly, make sure its implicit, the interviewer will notice. Then once the other candidates have their confidence knocked you make shit of them and then they will crumble completely and then you have won the battle.
Fewer questions received at a panel interview… Automatic ding? (Originally Posted: 06/03/2010)
I had a panel interview yesterday.
There were four senior executives on the interviewer side, and four candidates went into the meeting room at the same time.
Each four of us gave a short self-introduction of ourselves. And after that, interviewers asked each candidate some additional questions without any certain order.
The problem is, I had only received one question, while others received several questions. More specifically, #1 guy received 3 questions, #2 lady recevied 4~5 questions, and #3 guy received 7~8 questions.
This ain't a good signal, right?
How should I interpret this whole situation?
It's really too early to tell. It could mean a lot of things. Relax, have a few beers tonight, and wait for HR to call you back. If you don't hear back in 2 weeks, give them a call and move on if necessary.
