Toxic Workplace Advice

Currently at a LMM shop in a tier 2 city. Hours aren't horrible (50-60hr) but the environment makes the entire intern class want to leave. HR isn't really a thing here, so the office banter is completely out of pocket. One associate in particular has maybe 4 brain cells left and verbally abuses one intern and basically harasses the two girl interns (is in his 30s and still thinks the bull pen is a frat house). We all have nicknames that we don't know the meaning to and can't even count the amount of title 9 violations. Now, the interns are scared to come in and take extended lunches just so they don't have to return to the chaos. Shockingly, I still have faith because I am getting a good amount of experience.

Thank you for listening to my rant, and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable steps and advice for dealing with a toxic workplace:

  1. Evaluate Your Options:

    • If you can secure a better or similar offer that would enhance your resume or keep it neutral, consider leaving. As one user mentioned, "Leave if you can get a better or similar offer and it would help your resume or keep it neutral."
  2. Maintain Professionalism:

    • Avoid bad-mouthing your supervisor or the company, whether on platforms like Glassdoor or to others in the industry. Your co-workers will likely understand the situation without you having to explicitly state it. "Don't bad mouth the supervisor or the company here or on Glassdoor or to others in the industry, your co-workers will know what happened by reading between the lines."
  3. Exit Gracefully:

    • If you decide to leave, do so with a smile during your exit interview and don't look back. "Smile during your exit interview and don't look back. You owe them nothing."
  4. Set Boundaries:

    • Establish clear boundaries to protect your mental health. If the environment is affecting your well-being, it's crucial to prioritize your health. "You have to set boundaries and boundaries get respected or you get eaten to the bone."
  5. Seek Support:

    • If HR isn't effective, consider seeking advice from trusted mentors or colleagues outside the toxic environment. "Communicate. This isn't the 1980s. The industry is a kinder, gentler place and that's a good thing, If there's a problem, there are a lot of resources that can help."
  6. Focus on Self-Care:

    • Engage in activities that help you disconnect and regain a sense of normalcy. Regular exercise, maintaining a normal sleep schedule, and taking time for yourself can be beneficial. "The biggest thing that helped me recover was hitting the gym regularly, trying to keep a normal sleep schedule, and just disconnecting from the world to regain some sense of normalcy in my life."
  7. Leverage Your Experience:

    • Despite the toxic environment, if you're gaining valuable experience, use it to your advantage. Document your achievements and skills to bolster your resume for future opportunities. "I still have faith because I am getting a good amount of experience."

By following these steps, you can navigate the challenges of a toxic workplace while maintaining your professional integrity and mental well-being.
